In a city famed for its Egyptian Museum, the Museum of Oriental Art (MAO) offers a quieter, yet equally profound, journey. My solo trip here was a captivating escape across continents, a chance to wander through beautifully curated galleries dedicated to the artistic traditions of Asia, all at a contemplative pace perfect for the independent traveler.
My Perfect Solo Itinerary: A Morning Across Asia
10:00 AM - A Palatial Setting
I arrived just as the museum opened, entering the grand Mazzonis Palace. The building itself, with its elegant courtyards and restored interiors, is a work of art. The immediate sense of calm and order set the tone for my visit.
10:30 AM - A Journey Through Galleries
The museum's collection is thoughtfully divided by geographical region. As a solo visitor, I could choose my own path and linger where my curiosity took me. I spent the most time in two sections:
· The Japanese Gallery: This was a highlight of serene beauty. I stood before serene Zen Buddhist paintings, intricate samurai armor, and delicate woodblock prints. The minimalist presentation allowed each piece to speak for itself.
· The Himalayan Gallery: The atmosphere here was more mystical, filled with breathtaking Tibetan Buddhist thangkas (scroll paintings) and powerful, bronze ritual sculptures. The dim lighting and sacred ambiance encouraged quiet reflection.
12:00 PM - The Chinese & Islamic Worlds
I continued my journey through the Chinese collection, admiring ancient bronzes and graceful ceramics, and then into the Islamic Art gallery, where I marveled at the geometric precision of ceramics and calligraphy. The freedom to move between these diverse cultural worlds without any schedule was the ultimate luxury.
Solo Traveler Tips I Discovered:
· Use the Free Audio Guide: It's excellent and provides essential context for understanding the symbolism and history behind the artworks, enriching the solo experience immensely.
· Focus on a Few Galleries: The collection is vast. Don't try to see everything. Pick two or three regions that interest you most and explore them deeply.
· Look Up: The museum's architecture, with its vaulted ceilings and beautiful staircases, is part of the experience.
· Combine with a Coffee in the Courtyard: The internal courtyard is a peaceful spot to sit after your visit and process all the beauty you've taken in.
The MAO is a sanctuary of art and culture. For a solo traveler, it’s a peaceful, educational, and deeply rewarding destination that offers a unique and more intimate perspective on Turin's incredible museum scene.
