Byodoin Temple is known for the "Phoenix Hall" depicted on the 10 yen coin. It is one of the World Heritage Sites "Cultural Assets of Ancient Kyoto". It was opened by the regent Fujiwara no Yorimichi in 1052, and the "Phoenix Hall" was built the following year. It is said to have been built to recreate the Pure Land on earth, and its beauty remains unchanged to this day. The greatest attraction of Byodoin is the Phoenix Hall, where a golden phoenix shines. It was recently renovated in 2014, and the phoenix is now closer to the beauty it had when it was first built, covered in gold leaf.
