Byodoin Temple is known for the "Phoenix Hall" depicted on the 10 yen coin. It is one of the World Heritage Sites "Cultural Assets of Ancient Kyoto". It was opened by the regent Fujiwara no Yorimichi in 1052, and the "Phoenix Hall" was built the following year.
