Sankaku West Port, located in Uki City, Kumamoto, is the most complete modern port building site in Japan during the Meiji period, and is also one of the "Industrial Revolution Heritage of Meiji Japan". It was built in 1884 and designed by Dutch hydraulic engineer Murdel. The construction of the port and stone waterway was completed within 3 years, and the entire port and town were built into a floating town style, showing the urban landscape of the integration of Western and Japanese technology at that time.
Due to the limited terrain, Donggang later became the main port, which enabled Xigang to retain the streets, piers and bridges of a hundred years ago. Today, when walking in Xigang, a series of stone-stacked waterways and old Western-style houses come into view - historical buildings such as Ryujokan, Urashimaya, Sankaku Port Memorial Hall, and Ho-no-kan have all been restored and reused as exhibitions, cafes, visitor centers and other facilities. This place was also used as the filming location of the Japanese drama "Sakano no Kumo", and is a must-visit place in the hearts of many history fans and architecture enthusiasts.
As one of the three major ports built during the Meiji era, Sankaku West Port is not only well-preserved, but has also been selected as a civil engineering heritage and important cultural property, perfectly illustrating Kumamoto's key role in Japan's modernization.
