Chang Garden, located at 22 Miaotang Lane in the west of the city , is a typical small Suzhou garden. Built in the late Qing Dynasty by an owner named Pan, Chang Garden is characterized by its delicate landscaping. Despite its small size, it boasts a clever layout, rich and multi-layered landscape, and exquisite features.
The garden's centerpiece is a pond, surrounded by halls, pavilions, corridors, rockery, and gardens. The pond is long and narrow, with a curved bridge at its southern end bisecting the water. Yellow stone embankments and lush flowers and trees crisscross the pond, creating a rustic and elegant atmosphere. The main hall to the north of the pond is the Liuyun Mountain House, with a spacious terrace overlooking the pool. To the west, a curved corridor leads to the boat hall, " Cleansing My Dust ," built adjacent to the pool.
Looking south along the corridor, past the square pavilion facing the small pond, one can see the lake-rock rockery in the southwest corner of the garden, topped by the Moon-Waiting Pavilion, which connects to the winding corridor. A long corridor winds along the water to the east of the pond, with two small pavilions nestled between them . The hexagonal southern pavilion is named " Yanhui Chengqu , " while the square northern pavilion is named " Qijian , " both facing the water. North of the corridor runs the small four-sided hall " Tonghua Shuwu . " West of the hall, a sloping corridor connects to the Moon-Waiting Pavilion . To the south, a small courtyard is formed, planted with osmanthus trees. Further south, the three-bay Osmanthus Hall serves as the garden's entrance hall.
