Strolling Through Malta's History: A Historical Exploration Tour

Valletta didn’t just surprise me — it completely captivated me. As the smallest capital city in Europe, I expected it to be charming. But I wasn’t prepared for how much soul it would have. From the moment I walked through the City Gate and into its golden limestone streets, I felt like I was walking through a storybook — one with layers of history, art, sea breeze, and Mediterranean magic.
I stayed in a cozy boutique hotel just off Republic Street, Valletta’s main artery. Each morning, I’d grab a pastizz (flaky pastry filled with ricotta or peas) and stroll past honey-hued buildings with their iconic balconies. St. John’s Co-Cathedral took my breath away — it’s easily one of the most beautiful churches I’ve ever stepped into, its baroque interior dripping in gold and Caravaggio masterpieces.
But what mattered most to me? The views. Valletta is surrounded by sea, and its Upper Barrakka Gardens offer one of the most stunning panoramas in Europe — watching the cannons fire at noon while gazing out over the Grand Harbour was unforgettable. Evenings were for wandering the narrow side streets, where the light hits the stone just right and restaurants spill out into the lanes. The seafood? Fresh, flavorful, and best enjoyed with a Maltese white wine.
Best time to visit? April to June or late September to October, when the sun still shines but the crowds thin out. The weather is perfect for walking, exploring, and catching ferry rides to Sliema or the Three Cities.
Bonus Tips:
Take the Valletta Ferry Service for a scenic and cheap ride across the harbor.
Visit the MUŻA Museum for a taste of local and European art.
Don’t miss the National Library — quiet, beautiful, and filled with centuries of Maltese history.
Pack comfortable shoes — Valletta is hilly with plenty of steps and hidden corners to explore.
