Vatican Grottoes: The Majestic Tomb of St. Peter at the Millennium

The Vatican Grottoes, located beneath St. Peter's Basilica, were built between 1590 and 1591 to support the structure of the basilica above and later expanded to house the sacred crypt. Pope Clement VIII renovated the Clementina Chapel in 1592 to house the tomb of St. Peter.

Pope Paul V expanded the corridors and prayer area in the early 17th century, with contributions from artists such as Bernini. The grottoes house the tombs of over 90 popes and saints, connecting the remains of the 4th-century basilica to the Vatican cemetery below.

During the Jubilee Year of 2025, the grottoes symbolize forgiveness and spiritual renewal, attracting pilgrims to contemplate their faith's heritage.
