Caravans of the past and reception stages amid the sandstone

Stepping into the golden sandstone canyon, carved into temples and halls, the first impression is its compactness compared to Great Petra. Yet, it exudes an intimate atmosphere—a space once used for caravan rest and reception of pilgrims.

Red carpets adorn the stone courtyard, evoking a special evening's welcome. The sight of tourists gazing around the carved stone architecture suggests that, even after more than two thousand years, this place continues to serve as a "stage" for gatherings.

In a narrow passageway called Siq al-Barid, over 80 steep stone steps are believed to lead to a ritual site at the summit—a space connecting the human world with the spirit world. This belief reflects the fact that beyond trade, Little Petra also possesses a spiritual and religious dimension.

Along the walkway, stalls selling souvenirs, silverware, textiles, and carved bottles are lined up, surrounded by the smoke of tea from iron kettles over charcoal. The smoke lingers in the afternoon sun, while elderly women sit quietly spinning yarn by hand—these images tell the story of Bedouin life.

Looking back into history, The reason why Petra and Little Petra have become more interesting to Europeans than to Asians is no coincidence. The Nabataeans traded directly with the Greeks and Romans, a relationship reflected in the Hellenistic art evident on the cliffs. When Europeans discovered Petra in the 19th century, the story spread to the Western world through writings and exploration, making Petra a "collective legend" in European history.

Today, the French Tourist Association's event at Little Petra demonstrates the archaeological site's new role—from a trading caravan to an international cultural meeting place. Despite environmental concerns and overcrowding, it undeniably generates income for the Bedouin community and allows local culture to be shared with visitors.
