🇯🇵 The beautiful castle in western Japan – Wakayama Castle

Wakayama Castle is famous for its lush gardens and is very easy to get to. The surrounding grounds and gardens are beautiful and well worth a visit if you enjoy ancient castle sightseeing.

Wakayama Castle is one of the three major plain mountain castles in Japan, the other two being Matsuyama Castle and Himeji Castle. Although Wakayama Castle is now in its third generation due to lightning and bombing during World War II, the government has tried its best to rebuild it according to the original design so as not to damage its visibility. The curved stone walls of Wakayama Castle are original walls that were designed to fit the contours of the mountain, showing the ingenuity of the architecture.

The castle tower of Wakayama Castle is a connected tower tower, which was convenient for soldiers in the past to defend when the enemy moved from the small tower to the large tower. After passing through the Nanmen Gate of the small castle tower, there is a Japanese garden paved with white stones. The walls of the castle tower are also pure white, making the entire castle and inner courtyard look beautiful. Inside the castle are items related to the Kishu Tokugawa family, swords, armor, and daily necessities that were once used. From the top floor of the castle, one can overlook the entire streetscape of Wakayama City and the ancient city below.

After visiting the castle and its interior, you can slowly admire the castle tower from the viewing square of the Honmaru Palace ruins. This is also the ideal location for taking photos of the castle tower!
