Wakayama Castle is a beautiful and historically significant landmark located right in the heart of Wakayama City. Though the current keep is a post-war reconstruction, the extensive grounds, impressive walls, and unique features make it a must-visit spot that offers a great mix of history, architecture, and nature.
The Castle Keep (Tenshu):
The brilliant white, three-tiered main keep is the focal point of the castle grounds. While the original was destroyed during WWII, the 1958 concrete reconstruction faithfully captures the renritsu-shiki (interconnecting) style that makes it architecturally rare (often grouped with Himeji and Matsuyama Castles). Inside is a small museum displaying historical artifacts like samurai armor and weapons. The best part is the top floor observation deck, which provides a superb 360-degree panoramic view of Wakayama City and the Kinokawa River.
The Grounds (Wakayama Park):
The castle grounds are arguably as compelling as the keep itself, and entry to the park is free. Highlights include:
* Ohashi Roka Bridge (御橋廊下): A rare and unique feature—a covered, wooden bridge that ascends diagonally (at an 11-degree pitch) over a moat. It was used by the feudal lord and his retinue to move between two areas without being seen. You can walk across it for a fun, immersive experience.
* Momijidani Teien Garden (紅葉渓庭園): A traditional Chisen Kaiyu (stroll-around pond) garden, particularly stunning for viewing the vibrant autumn leaves (Momiji) or the cherry blossoms (Sakura) in spring. The nearby Koshoan teahouse is perfect for enjoying matcha with a view.
* Original Stone Walls & Gates: While the keep is new, much of the original, massive stone fortifications remain, including the historical Okaguchi Gate, giving visitors a tangible sense of the castle's former scale.
Overall Verdict:
Wakayama Castle is one of Japan's "Three Great Flatland Mountain Castles" and an excellent destination. It works perfectly as a half-day trip: explore the free grounds and the unique bridge, then pay the small fee to enter the keep for the history exhibits and the fantastic city views. It is a peaceful, beautiful park year-round, making it a proud and highly recommended symbol of Wakayama City.
