Weihai, a Dreamy Travel Guide to This Seaside Town

I took a trip to Weihai and felt like I had fallen into a stunning fairy tale world.
The sea in Weihai is the clearest and gentlest I’ve ever seen; the city is full of lively local life yet incredibly romantic.
Today, I’m sharing my treasure trove of travel tips for Weihai, so you can easily start your own dreamy journey here!

Preparation

Documents

ID card, student ID (don’t forget if you have discounts).

Clothing

Weihai has big temperature differences between morning and evening, so even in summer, it’s best to bring a light jacket. If you plan to play in the sea, bring a swimsuit and slippers.

Other Items

Sunscreen, sunglasses, hat, umbrella (Weihai’s weather is changeable), camera (to capture the breathtaking scenery).

Best Time to Visit

The best time to visit Weihai is from June to September. The weather is warm and the sea is clear, perfect for enjoying the ocean. July and August are peak tourist seasons with more crowds; June and September are less crowded and better for a relaxed vacation.

Transportation Guide

External Transport

● Airplane: Weihai Dashuibo International Airport offers airport shuttles to the city, or you can take a taxi or ride-hailing service.

● Train: Weihai Station and Weihai North Station are both in the city, with convenient transport.

Internal Transport

● Bus: Weihai’s bus routes cover most attractions and are affordable.

● Taxi/Ride-hailing: Convenient but may encounter traffic jams during peak season.

● Car Rental: If traveling with a group, renting a car is a great option for more flexible scheduling.

Accommodation Recommendations

Huancui District

Close to the sea and city center, convenient for travel, shopping, and dining. Staying near Weigao Plaza is a good choice, with many malls and food streets nearby.

Rongcheng City

If you want to visit Chengshantou or Shendiao Mountain Wildlife World, staying in Rongcheng is more suitable.

Food Highlights

Seafood

Weihai is the seafood capital, so be sure to try the local seafood. We recommend going to the seafood market near the docks to pick fresh seafood yourself, then have it cooked at nearby restaurants—economical and delicious. Must-try dishes include crab, shrimp, shellfish, and sea cucumber.

Hairtail Fish Dumplings

A Weihai specialty, these dumplings have thin skins and large fillings, with fresh, juicy hairtail fish meat—absolutely delicious👍.

Weihai Mung Bean Jelly

Made from sweet potato starch, served with shrimp paste and garlic sauce, it has a soft and unique taste.

Attraction Guide

Day 1: Coastal Road Cycling Tour

● Maotou Mountain: A popular photo spot in Weihai, drive or cycle along the winding mountain road with stunning sea views. You can stop at the viewing platform to take photos and feel the sea breeze.

● International Seawater Bathing Beach: The sand here is fine and soft, and the water is crystal clear. You can play in the sand, wade in the waves, swim, and enjoy beautiful sunsets.

● Torch 8th Street: Known as “Little Kamakura,” the street ends at the sea, making it a perfect photo spot.

Day 2: Liugong Island Historical and Cultural Tour

● Liugong Island: The birthplace of China’s first modern navy, the Beiyang Fleet. The island has many historical sites and museums. Start at the Museum of the First Sino-Japanese War to learn about that tragic history, then visit the Beiyang Navy Admiral’s Office and Ding Ruchang Memorial Hall.

● Dingyuan Warship Scenic Area: Located by Weihai Bay, it features a 1:1 replica of the Dingyuan warship. Boarding the ship feels like traveling back to the turbulent war era.

Day 3: Rongcheng Natural Scenery Exploration

● Chengshantou: The easternmost point where China’s land meets the sea, it’s the first place to see the sunrise over the ocean and is called “China’s Cape of Good Hope.” Standing on the summit, facing the sea breeze and watching waves crash against the rocks is spectacular.

● Shendiao Mountain Wildlife World: Get close to various animals including giant pandas, Siberian tigers, and African lions. The zoo is by the sea, so you can enjoy animals and ocean views at the same time for a full experience.

Notes

● The UV rays in Weihai are strong, so be sure to take sun protection measures.

● Be safe when playing by the sea and follow the park rules.

● Eat seafood in moderation to avoid stomach discomfort.
