🚖Wenchuan County, Aba Tibetan and Qiang Autonomous Prefecture, is a 1-hour drive from downtown Chengdu. The town of Yingxiu in Wenchuan County is known for the Wenchuan Earthquake. Today, the reborn Yingxiu is the core area of the Wenchuan Special Tourist Area, a 5A-level scenic area. The town has been completely rebuilt, except for the ruins of Xuankou Middle School and the Wenchuan Earthquake Epicenter Memorial Hall on the hillside, which remind people of the disaster.
🏚️The Wenchuan Earthquake Epicenter Memorial Hall is located behind the cemetery on the hillside north of the town. The cemetery is the resting place of the earthquake victims. There are no tombs, only green grass. The walls of the cemetery are made of marble, engraved with the names and birth and death dates of the victims.
☑️The building is designed in a landscape style. The side facing the town is a powerful cantilevered structure, while the side facing the village is a green roof that blends into the mountain.
✅The interior is divided into five exhibition halls: the Preface Hall, the Earthquake Damage Hall, the Earthquake Relief Hall, the Reconstruction Hall, and the Earthquake Prevention Hall. Compared to the Wenchuan Earthquake Memorial Hall in Beichuan, this one is much smaller, but every hall, every artifact, and every photo is still shocking.
🎫Tickets: Free admission, no reservation required.
📍Address: Yingxiu Town, Wenchuan County, Aba Tibetan and Qiang Autonomous Prefecture. The memorial hall is located on a hillside, so you need to climb up. It is also a great place to overlook the ruins of Xuankou Middle School, the National Sentiment Square, and the entire town of Yingxiu. The towering mountains are right in front of you, and the small hills below the mountains make you feel awe.
🚶♂️Recommended one-day tour: Tian Di Yingxiu Street in Yingxiu Town → Ruins of Xuankou Middle School → National Sentiment Square → National Sentiment Academy → Wenchuan Earthquake Epicenter Memorial Hall → Urban Emergency Experience Center → Shuimo Ancient Town.
