Perched at an altitude of 3,558 meters in the heart of the Huanglong Scenic Area, 黄龙古寺 is the core cultural landmark of the Huanglong Valley. Built in the Ming Dynasty, the temple’s origins are steeped in legend — it’s said that a Yellow Dragon once helped control floods here, earning the temple its name.
The rear hall, still perfectly preserved, is built in traditional Taoist style and enshrines a rare statue of the Yellow Dragon immortal. The temple’s gate is a masterpiece of craftsmanship — its alignment lets you see “黄龙古寺” head-on, with the left view transforming into “飞阁流丹” (Flying Pavilions, Flowing Crimson) and the right into “山空水碧” (Mountains in the Sky, Emerald Waters), hailed as a wonder of architectural aesthetics.
In front of the temple, a landscape of pines dusted with snow, golden sands, tiered waterfalls, and turquoise pools paints a breathtaking picture. As part of a dual UNESCO natural and cultural heritage site, Huanglong Ancient Temple forms a dazzling “human jade pool” together with the nearby Five-Color Pools — a 1 km² collection of nature’s finest colors.
📍 Travel Tip: Visit on a clear day for the best views of the surrounding snow mountains and colorful pools. The altitude is high, so pace yourself and stay hydrated.
✨ Standing here, you’re not just admiring a temple — you’re witnessing the seamless blend of myth, architecture, and the unmatched beauty of Huanglong.
