Having lived in Wenzhou for so many years, this was my first time visiting Luxi Island, and I found it to be just as good as Nanji Island, with the key advantage of free attractions and low costs.
Luxi Island is an offshore island in Dongtou, Wenzhou, accessible only by boat. It's best to stay overnight to experience the slow-paced island life.
Arrive at the Dameng Pier at 7 AM. This year, the newly opened Sha'ao Pier offers a 20-minute boat ride to Luxi Island, with each trip allowing car ferrying. After arriving on the island, visit the Daotan Rock Geological Park. A 30-minute walk will take you to a rocky beach with marine erosion landforms. There is also a pebble beach at Wuren'ao. After lunch, you can take a short nap and then head to the Shanping Camping Viewing Platform in the afternoon, which is the highest point on Luxi Island and offers a panoramic view of the island.
Bailongyu is the most important attraction on the island, an excellent spot for watching the sunrise and a natural marine pasture for yellow croaker farming.
Wake up naturally in the morning, and take a boat to Bird Island at 10 AM. The trip takes 40 minutes, and it can be a bit dizzying if the waves are high, so be mentally prepared. After arriving at the Bird Island viewing platform, you can stay for about 20 minutes and get close to the birds. Among them are five nationally protected species: the Chinese Egret, the Red-billed Egret, the Common Buzzard, the Eurasian Kestrel, and the Peregrine Falcon, as well as seven provincially protected species. There are countless seagulls and petrels. To photograph the birds, you need a professional telephoto lens, and if you have a drone, the birds will follow it as it flies.
From May to September each year, tens of thousands of birds inhabit this island, making it the best season for bird watching.
The island's attractions are free, and there are no railings on the coastal rocks. Do not get too close to the sea, support each other when walking on the rocks, and wear suitable outdoor clothing.
Currently, there are two points for boats to Luxi Island: Dameng and Yuanjue. It takes 20 minutes from Dameng (recommended) and 40 minutes from Yuanjue, both allowing car ferrying. Boat tickets can be purchased on the Dongtou Island Inter-island Transportation APP.
There are many farmhouses and homestays near the pier, with prices ranging from 180 to 300 yuan. There are also many seafood restaurants.
