The Southern Cross-Island Highway stretches approximately 208 kilometers from Tang Dezhang Memorial Park in West Central District, Tainan City, to Degao in Guanshan Township, Taitung County. Tainan's Southern Cross-Island Highway offers a diverse array of attractions, including natural landscapes, indigenous tribes, historical and cultural sites, and leisure activities. Key attractions include Tianchi Lake, Yakou Sea of Clouds, Zhongzhiguan Ancient Trail, Lidao Village, Wulu Gorge, Liukou Hot Springs, Tianlong Suspension Bridge, Xiangyang National Forest Recreation Area, and the Meishan Visitor Center. There are also several unique towns, such as Baolai and Jiaxian. Tianchi, a high mountain lake shaped like a heart, is nicknamed "Heart Lake." Its high altitude and misty surroundings have earned it the nickname "Heart of the Mountain." At approximately 2,280 meters above sea level, the Changqing Shrine commemorates the engineers who died while developing the Southern Cross-Island Highway. The Daguanshan Tunnel, at 2,722 meters, is the highest point on the Southern Cross-Island Highway. The Zhongzhiguan Ancient Trail, dating back to the Japanese colonial era, is ideal for hiking, and the sea of clouds at the pass often boasts magnificent, swirling clouds. The Dao Village, a Bunun tribe, is the highest community in Haiduan Township. Wulu Gorge boasts a spectacular canyon with a winding river. Xiangyang National Forest Recreation Area, with its rich natural ecology, is ideal for hiking and serves as the starting point for the climb to Jiaming Lake. The Southern Cross-Island Highway section from Meishankou to Tianchi was closed due to Typhoon Morakot but reopened in 2020 after 10 years of restoration. The scenery along the Southern Cross-Island Highway can be described as "magnificent," "diverse," and "breathtaking." It is famous for its towering mountains, canyons, seas of clouds, red leaves, and rich ecology. It is the southernmost of Taiwan's three cross-country highways.
