Yellow Crane Tower: A cultural landmark with a long history and a must-see treasure of Wuhan

The Yellow Crane Tower is Wuhan's most famous attraction.
The original 黄鹤楼 was built in AD 223 but it has been rebuilt several times since then. In fact, the tower has been said to mirror the fortunes of China itself. The previous iteration burnt down in the late Qing Dynasty, when Wuhan was a treaty port forced open by the Great Powers. The current version, a convincing copy of the Qing tower (with the addition of a lift for those unable to climb the many stairs) was built during the PRC's opening up in the 1980s.
Yellow Crane Tower overlooks the Yangtze and is in a lovely park containing another tower, tranquil gardens and a giant bell you can ring for a modest donation. I recommend going in the mid- to late-afternoon so you can spend a couple of hours enjoying the park before climbing the tower in time to see the sunset. Admission is a little steep but don't cheap out. It's really worth going if you're in Wuhan.
