Iconic Icon — The Giant Wild Goose Pagoda
The Giant Wild Goose Pagoda (大雁塔, Dàyàn Tǎ) is one of Xi’an’s most iconic landmarks and one of China’s most famous ancient Buddhist pagodas. Built in 652 AD during the Tang Dynasty, it was originally constructed to store and protect Buddhist sutras and figurines brought from India by the famous monk Xuanzang, who traveled the Silk Road.
The pagoda stands majestically at seven stories tall, made of brick with a simple, elegant design that has survived earthquakes and restorations for over 1,300 years. It’s part of the Da Ci’en Temple complex and is surrounded by peaceful gardens, squares, and the popular musical fountain.
Climbing to the top gives visitors sweeping views of ancient Xi’an — once China’s grand Tang capital and the starting point of the Silk Road. The pagoda is not just a religious site but a symbol of the cultural exchange between China and India, and a testament to Xi’an’s glorious history.
