Quietly waiting for nightfall in front of Langmu Temple

Sitting on the steps before Langmu Temple, I waited for the darkness to descend. The tourists had long since dispersed, leaving only me and the stone steps, the steps and the mountains, the mountains and the sky, and the sky with the dying white sun. The wind blew in from the west, brushing past prayer flags and mani stones, numbing my face but unable to stir the hem of the old monk's crimson robe.

The old monk walked past me without a glance, neither at me nor at the temple gate, his gaze fixed on the distant mountains. The overlapping ridges loomed dark as iron, swallowing the remnants of the sun and exhaling a faint blue mist. He murmured softly, whether chanting sutras or talking to himself, his hoarse voice blending with the wind, becoming part of the rhythm of heaven and earth.

A woman performing full-body prostrations passed by. She rose and bowed, rose and bowed, like the ebb and flow of tides, like the rhythm of fate. Her forehead was smeared with a mix of dirt and blood, forming a dark red paste, yet her eyes shone with an extraordinary brightness—perhaps when one entrusts everything to faith, their gaze naturally becomes a beacon of enlightenment. She paid no attention to her surroundings, unaware of any onlookers, inching forward to measure the suffering of the human world.

Finally, the sky turned completely dark. Lights began to flicker on in the temple—one, then two, eventually forming a faint patch of illumination. The wind grew colder, and the prayer flags flapped more urgently, sounding like countless tiny souls weeping in the night.

I stood up, stomped my feet to shake off the chill, and walked toward the cluster of human lights. In the shadows, an unknown creature darted through the grass, rustling softly.
