Siguniang Mountain, with its towering snow-capped peaks, vast meadows, and dense forests, is a sacred destination in western Sichuan for countless travelers. This two-day one-night itinerary will take you through the breathtaking landscapes of Siguniang Mountain!
Pre-Trip Preparation
1. Clothing: Due to significant temperature differences between day and night, bring warm clothing such as down jackets and windbreakers.
2. Gear: High-SPF sunscreen, sunglasses, sun hat, hiking shoes, insulated water bottle, and rain gear.
3. Medicine: Take Rhodiola rosea a week in advance to prevent altitude sickness. Also, prepare oxygen canisters, glucose oral solution, cold medicine, and stomach medicine.
Itinerary
- Day 1: Exploring the Magnificence of Shuangqiao Valley
- Morning: Depart from Chengdu (about a 4-hour drive), enjoying the stunning scenery of Balang Mountain along the way. Stop at Maobiliang Viewing Platform, the perfect spot to admire the panoramic view of Siguniang Mountain’s four peaks. If you’re lucky, you might witness the golden glow of sunrise on the snow-capped mountains.
- Afternoon: Enter Shuangqiao Valley Scenic Area (entrance fee: ¥80 + sightseeing bus: ¥70). Take the bus directly to Redwood Forest, where the high-altitude primeval forest contrasts beautifully with the snowy mountains. Stroll along the boardwalk, breathe in the fresh air, and immerse yourself in nature’s tranquility. Next, visit Budala Peak, where the open meadows and white stupas create a perfect backdrop for stunning photos. The crystal-clear waters of Siguniao Lake reflect the snowy peaks like a fairyland. At Nianyuba, you can try an exciting rafting adventure (additional fee) and feel your heart race in the rushing currents.
- Evening: Stay overnight in Siguniangshan Town. Recommended accommodations include Zhongshan Inn (great value with complete facilities) or Sigula Manor Hotel (elegant environment with oxygen supply to ease altitude sickness). For dinner, try the local yak hotpot—tender yak meat in a rich broth, paired with barley pancakes and butter tea—a true culinary delight.
- Day 2: Discovering the Untamed Beauty of Changping Valley
- Morning: Head to Changping Valley Scenic Area (entrance fee: ¥70 + sightseeing bus: ¥20). After taking the bus to Lama Temple, choose between hiking or horseback riding to explore the primeval forest. Hiking covers about 7 km of boardwalk and 5 km of dirt road, with ancient cypresses, streams, and waterfalls along the way—like stepping into a fairy tale. Horseback riding (around ¥300) allows you to reach Muluozi faster, where snow-capped mountains, meadows, and forests blend perfectly, showcasing the essence of Changping Valley.
- Afternoon: After enjoying local specialties like fritillary bulb stewed chicken and stir-fried cured pork with wood ear mushrooms, begin your return trip to Chengdu. Pass by Maobiliang Viewing Platform again—you might capture a different perspective of Siguniang Mountain’s beauty.
Important Notes
1. Altitude Sickness: Avoid strenuous activity upon arrival. Stay calm, rest well, and seek medical help or oxygen if symptoms worsen.
2. Warmth & Sun Protection: Bring warm layers even in summer. The high-altitude UV rays are strong—wear sunglasses, hats, and apply sunscreen.
3. Respect Local Customs: Follow local traditions, avoid touching temple items, and refrain from photography in prohibited areas.
4. Environmental Protection: Siguniang Mountain’s ecosystem is fragile. Carry out all trash—leave only footprints.
