1️⃣ Many tourists consider Guoyu Ancient City as an affiliated scenic spot of the Royal City Xiangfu, possibly bypassing it due to time constraints. However, in terms of the value of ancient relics alone, I think Guoyu Ancient City surpasses Xiangfu.
2️⃣ Observations:
Guoyu Village is the hometown of Zhang Pengyun, the Shuntian Inspector of the Ming Dynasty, Zhang Ersu, the Minister of Justice of the Qing Dynasty, and Wang Chongxin, a wealthy merchant in the late Ming and early Qing Dynasties. It is also where Chen Tingjing, the owner of the Royal City Xiangfu, grew up, and the place where the predecessor of the Third Military Medical University, the Seventh Military Medical University, was established.
Its history is long, built by the Guo family, and named after the surname. Guoyu was first established in the early Tang Dynasty. During the Ming Dynasty, Guoyu was a li, and in the Qing Dynasty, it was also called a town. In the sixth year of the Republic of China, the village system was implemented, and Guoyu Li was changed to Guoyu Village.
3️⃣ Guoyu Village is large in scale and complete in form. The ancient building area of the village reaches 180,000 square meters, with city walls and towers, official residences, residential houses, temples and ancestral halls, shops and workshops, gardens, gatehouses and screen walls, wells, and ruins. It is not only an ancient architectural complex with strong local characteristics in the Qinhe River Basin but also a beehive-like ancient fortress group.
4️⃣ Guoyu Ancient City is praised by ancient architecture experts as a gathering place of Chinese ancient architecture. The existing traditional courtyards maintain their original state in terms of architectural layout, form, materials, and craftsmanship. The overall design and construction were all done by local craftsmen, truly reflecting the traditional local architectural culture. Although it has been designated as a scenic spot, the modifications to the ancient relics are limited, preserving much of the ancient charm.
5️⃣ The city kilns of Guoyu Ancient City are very distinctive. There are more than six hundred kilns in the city, densely packed like a beehive, hence Guoyu City is also called "Beehive City".
