Naksansa Temple, located in Yangyang County, Gangwon Province, is a historic temple founded by Great Monk Uisang in the 11th year of King Munmu's reign (671) of the Silla Dynasty. It is renowned for its beautiful scenery overlooking the East Sea and as one of Korea's three major Avalokitesvara (Guanyin) prayer halls. Designated a scenic spot, Uisangdae Pavilion, an octagonal pavilion perched on a coastal cliff, is particularly popular, offering breathtaking views of the sunrise over the East Sea. Naksansa Temple is home to numerous cultural assets, including the Seawater Avalokitesvara Statue, Hongnyeonam Hermitage, and the Seven-story Stone Pagoda. Surrounded by the sea and forest, the entire temple complex resembles a landscape painting. Uisangdae Pavilion is where Great Monk Uisang practiced meditation and is one of the Eight Scenic Views of Gwandong. It's a must-visit destination for any Gangneung trip, offering both healing and historical exploration.
