The heart of Jeolla Left Navy that protected the sea⛩ Yeosu Jinnamgwan, the beauty of its history and architecture

#Domestic travel

🏯 **Jinnam-gwan (鎭南館)** is the headquarters building of the Jeolla Left Naval Base in Yeosu during the Joseon Dynasty,
and is well known as the place where General Yi Sun-sin stayed after the Imjin War.

The current building was rebuilt in 1718 (44th year of King Sukjong’s reign),
and is the largest wooden structure in the country in terms of single size.
It was the military center where the Jeolla Left Naval Base Commander commanded the navy, issued military orders, and held meetings.

📏 The building consists of a large single-story hip roof with 15 rooms on the front and 5 rooms on the side,
and the roof curve is very elegant, and the pillars, beams, and bracket structures show the typical architectural style of the late Joseon Dynasty government offices.

The unified pillar arrangement, the wide porch in the center,
and the layout on the terrain of the blue dragon on the left and the white tiger on the right that utilizes nature —
It is a building that is both functional and aesthetically pleasing.

💡 Inside, there is an exhibition hall of relics related to naval activities,
and materials related to Admiral Yi Sun-sin are exhibited together,
so it is a space where you can experience not only the exterior but also the historical context.

🌊 Impressions
“Jinnamgwan is not just an old building,
but it felt like a space filled with the breath of the naval forces that protected Joseon.
Standing under the magnificent pillars and roof,
it felt like time had flowed backwards and I was standing in the middle of a war.
This is probably what they mean when they say that history permeates architecture.”
