Yokohama, a port city near Tokyo, was once selected as the city that Japanese people most want to live in. Facing Tokyo Bay, it is a charming city with diverse cultures. The "Sankei-en Garden" located in the central area of the city is a garden where you can fully experience Japanese culture.
📍 58-1 Honmoku Sannotani, Naka-ku, Yokohama
🚎 Take bus No. 8 or No. 148 from Yokohama Station East Exit Platform 2 and get off at Sankeien Entrance. It takes about 35 minutes
🎫 Adults: 700 yen; Children under 15 years old: 200 yen
This garden, located in Naka-ku, Yokohama, Japan, covers an area of 17.5 square kilometers, which is the size of 17.5 standard football fields. There are 17 Japanese-style buildings in the entire garden, including 10 national important cultural properties and 3 Yokohama city designated tangible cultural properties.
Sankei-en Garden itself was built by businessmen, and the earliest building in the garden was built as early as 1902. It has been expanded to its current size and donated to the Yokohama City Government in 1953. 2022 happens to be the 100th anniversary of "Sankei Garden". Although it suffered considerable damage during the war, it was beautifully restored, with the building taking full advantage of the undulating grounds and creating a harmonious feel with the gardens. "Sankei Garden" was designated as a scenic spot by the Japanese government in 2006.
The 17 buildings include: Hexiang Pavilion, Lindongan, Hengdian, the three-story pagoda of the old Dengming Temple, the old main hall of Dengming Temple, the old Buddha Hall of Tokei Temple, the old residence of the Yabuhara family, Rinchun Pavilion, Baiyun Residence, the old Shouta Futang of Tenzui Temple, Yuehua Hall, Jinmao Cave, Tenjuin, Heqiu Pavilion, Chuncaolu, Lianhuayuan, and Gomon
Although not all buildings are open to visitors, you can still feel the elegance of the buildings by looking at their designs from the outside and blending them with the gardens, and appreciating the flowers of each season in the gardens.
If you are tired of walking, you can go to the teahouse or restaurant in the park to enjoy Japanese snacks such as matcha and wagashi and fully experience the strong Japanese style.
Restaurants in the park: Matcha Lookout Tower Pavilion, Sankeien Tea House, Kagane Tea House, Taishunken
