Journey to the Kingdom of Wa: My Solo Trip to Yoshinogari Historical Park, Saga

Step back 2,000 years at Yoshinogari Historical Park, one of Japan's most important and fascinating archaeological sites. This vast park brings the Yayoi period (300 BC–300 AD) to life, centered on a massive moated settlement that some scholars link to the legendary kingdom of Yamatai-koku. For a solo traveler, it's an immersive, open-air museum perfect for unleashing your inner explorer.

My Solo Itinerary:

· Morning – The Inner Sanctum & Watchtowers: I entered the park and headed straight for the Inner Enclosure (Minaminokuruwa). Walking across the dramatic South Gate Bridge felt like crossing into another world. I climbed the towering watchtowers for a bird's-eye view of the entire settlement—a strategic view once used to guard the ancient chiefs. I explored the reconstructed pit dwellings and raised-floor storehouses, imagining daily life here two millennia ago.
· Afternoon – The Outer Settlement & Hands-On History: I spent the afternoon wandering the Outer Enclosure (Nakanokuruwa) and the vast Lower Settlement (Teichōson). I visited the enormous Main Burial Mound (Saikobo) and the solemn Northern Burial Mounds. The best part was the hands-on area, where I tried my hand at starting a fire with a bow drill or making an ancient Yayoi-period bracelet.
· Evening – Museum Deep Dive & Local Noodles: I ended my visit at the superb Yoshinogari History Museum, which houses the actual artifacts found on-site, including the iconic bell-shaped dotaku bronze ritual objects. Before heading back, I stopped for a bowl of Saga's famous guamen noodles—a rich, chicken-based ramen.
