I stumbled upon this must-visit coffee shop in Yufuin because I was craving a Showa-style pudding and had some extra time to spare during my stay. The entrance isn't flashy; instead, it feels like stepping into a neighbor's house through a small staircase and door. Upon entering, I noticed two small tables by the window and an empty seat at the long counter in front of the owner, who smiled and gestured for me to sit there. The interior is simple yet classic, with a touch of elegance, and soothing classical music fills the air. The rich aroma of coffee is, of course, a given in such a place. The owner, with graceful movements, brewed coffee at his own unhurried pace. Everything about this place felt gentle and slow, like a piece of art.
After serving the earlier customers, the owner handed me a menu. I already knew what I wanted, so I showed him a picture on my phone and ordered a cup of hot coffee served in a wine glass and the Showa-style pudding I had been longing to try. The owner carefully brought out the utensils, heated the water, and began brewing the coffee with a calm demeanor. Drinking coffee here felt like a ritual, where you also get to appreciate the owner's meticulous process. He maintained a warm smile throughout, embodying the quintessential Japanese hospitality. Though his English was limited, we managed to communicate through gestures and expressions.
This place is a serene escape from the hustle and bustle outside, embodying the essence of Yufuin. If you’re willing to take some time to slowly enjoy a cup of coffee, this is the perfect spot. As I left, the owner kindly and warmly saw me off at the door, leaving me deeply touched by his heartfelt service. This coffee shop has instantly earned a spot on my list of must-visit places in Yufuin.
