Chongning Temple greeted us with the kind of quiet that doesn’t ask for attention just presence. Tucked into the hillside, it appeared slowly as we climbed the stone steps, partly hidden by trees and softened by time. There was no grand entrance, no rush of tourists just the soft clinking of a wind chime, the smell of incense barely lingering in the air, and the faint rustle of leaves brushing against old wooden beams.
What we loved most was how natural everything felt like the temple was part of the mountain, not built on it. Inside the courtyard, a monk moved silently across the stones, sweeping without hurry. We sat on a low wall for a while, watching the light shift across the tiled roofs, listening to the occasional birdcall echo through the quiet. There was a stillness there that felt generous, like it didn’t mind sharing. We didn’t go for prayer or ritual, just to sit, to breathe, to step out of our own heads for a while. And that was more than enough.
