With its electric blue waters, dramatic cliffs, and sands that range from gold to pure white, the island of Zakynthos (Zante) is a Ionian paradise. My solo trip here was a perfect blend of iconic sights, hidden coves, and the freedom to follow the sun and my own whims. It’s an ideal destination for a solo traveler seeking both vibrant energy and serene solitude.
My Perfect Solo Itinerary: A Tapestry of Blue
Day 1: The Iconic & The Accessible
I based myself in a central coastal town like Tsilivi for its great bus connections and amenities. My first day was about seeing the world-famous sights.
· Morning: I joined a boat tour to Shipwreck Beach (Navagio). While the cove itself is inaccessible for swimming from land, the view from the boat is unforgettable. The sheer scale of the cliffs and the brilliant color of the water is a must-see.
· Afternoon: The tour also took us to the Blue Caves, where I had the chance to jump off the boat into the cool, crystal-clear water. It was an exhilarating solo moment.
Day 2: Turtles & Tranquility
I dedicated my second day to the island's gentle giants and quieter shores.
· Morning: I took a local bus to Laganas and joined a responsible, eco-friendly turtle-watching boat trip into the National Marine Park. Spotting a Caretta caretta sea turtle in the wild was a magical experience.
· Afternoon: I escaped the crowds and found my way to Porto Roxa, a stunning, rocky cove with a small beach and a fantastic seaside taverna. It was the perfect spot for a solo swim and a long, lazy lunch with a book.
Day 3: A Solo Road Trip
I rented a small car for the ultimate freedom and explored the wilder western side of the island.
· I discovered my own private pebble cove near Keri Lighthouse.
· I visited the charming Venetian Castle on Bohali hill for panoramic views.
· I ended the day watching the sunset from Keri or Agios Sostis, a truly peaceful and cinematic solo moment.
Solo Traveler Tips I Discovered:
· Rent a Car or ATV for a Day: This is the best way to access the island's hidden gems and remote beaches at your own pace.
· Use the Bus System: The KTEL bus network is reliable and connects the main towns, making it easy to get around without a car every day.
· Stay Central: Choosing a base like Tsilivi or Argasi offers a good balance of amenities and easy transport links.
· Embrace the Tavernas: Greek tavernas are wonderfully welcoming for solo diners. No one blinks an eye at someone enjoying a meal alone with a book.
Zakynthos is an island that rewards both adventure and relaxation. For a solo traveler, it’s a safe, beautiful, and incredibly photogenic destination where you can create your own perfect Greek island story.
