In winter, Tohoku, Japan, boasts a fantastical spectacle: the "juhyo" (ice-covered trees) of Zao in Yamagata Prefecture. From December to March each year, the summits of the Zao mountain range are blanketed in thick layers of ice and snow. The frigid northwest monsoon brings moisture from the Sea of Japan to the mountains, where it condenses on coniferous trees, forming a spectacular display of "snow monsters" through repeated freezing and accumulation. These trees, encased in layers of ice and snow, resemble bizarre sculptures stretching for kilometers, creating a breathtaking spectacle.
Zao juhyo formations are extremely rare, found only in Tohoku, Japan, the United States, and certain high-latitude regions of Russia. Zao's juhyo are the most spectacular, earning them the title of "one of the world's three largest juhyo displays." Whenever the sun shines, the snowfield shimmers with a silvery white glow. At night, the ski resort hosts the "Juhyo Night Light-up" event, where colorful lights illuminate the icy monsters, transforming them into a dreamy blue and mysterious green, creating a fairytale-like experience.
The most convenient way to admire the juhyo is by taking the Zao Ropeway. Departing from the foot station, the Zao Ropeway passes through the middle station and reaches the summit of Zao Jizo Mountain. Along the way, you can overlook the snowy forest and the azure sky beyond. The best viewing period is typically from late January to mid-February, when the weather is most stable and the juhyo are in their most complete form. Besides the scenic beauty, Zao is also a renowned ski resort in Japan. Visitors can combine skiing, hot springs, and juhyo viewing to experience the quintessential winter charm of Tohoku.
Zao Onsen is also a highlight of the trip. The sulfur-rich, milky-white waters are known as "beautifying springs." Soaking in the chilly waters can dispel the cold and soothe fatigue. Many travelers enjoy soaking in the snow-covered open-air baths while gazing at the distant frost-covered trees.
From the magnificent snowscape during the day to the dreamy illuminations at night, the Zao frost trees, with their natural power and artistic expression, showcase the ultimate beauty of winter Japan. This experience is not only a visual feast, but also a journey that allows one to deeply experience the wonders of nature.
