On this trip, I visited the emerald green lake of the Alps, Grünsee! 🇨🇭💚💧
🛄 | A Hidden Green Sanctuary in Nature
Grünsee is the third lake on the 5 Lakes Trail (5-Seenweg), which starts from Blauherd. As its name suggests, it means 'Green Lake.' Walking along the gentle downhill trail, you’ll start to see the deep green waves of the lake through the forest. The surroundings are a mix of rocks and meadows, with travelers spreading out mats on the grass to relax. Amidst the tranquil atmosphere, you can faintly hear birds chirping and water flowing.
🌿 The Harmony of Matterhorn and the Green Lake
Unlike other lakes, Grünsee has a unique color. Its emerald green hue is due to the minerals mixed in the glacial water. When sunlight hits the surface, it sparkles like transparent glass, and gentle breezes create soft ripples. In the distance, the peak of the Matterhorn peeks out, reflecting on the water and blending beautifully with the colors of the forest and lake, creating a picturesque scene.
🏔️ A Perfect Picnic Spot in the Alps
The area around Grünsee is flat and spacious, making it one of the best lakes for relaxation. Travelers enjoy simple packed lunches, while children play by the water, skipping stones. There are plenty of shady spots under the trees, and wildflowers bloom across the lake, adding to the peaceful ambiance. Despite being in a high-altitude area, it feels warm and cozy.
✅️ | Travel Tips
1️⃣ Route – Zermatt → Sunnegga → Blauherd → Approximately 1-hour walk (third lake on the 5-Seenweg).
2️⃣ Recommended Time – Around midday (11 AM–2 PM) is the most peaceful and warm. The sunlight reflects off the water, making the green hues more vivid.
3️⃣ Essentials – Simple packed lunch, water, a mat, or a thin cushion. The rocks by the lake are hard, so bring something comfortable to sit on.
4️⃣ Caution – As it’s a high-altitude area, the temperature difference can be significant, so bring a long-sleeve jacket. Even in summer, the water is cold, so be cautious when dipping your feet.
