Putuo Huiji Temple: A Serene Haven of Fragrant Clouds atop Mount Foding

Huiji Temple, located at the summit of Mount Foding in the Zhoushan Archipelago of Zhejiang Province, is also known as "Foding Mountain Temple." Legend has it that the site was originally a stone pavilion, which was later transformed into Huiji Hermitage during the early Ming Dynasty. During the reign of Emperor Qianlong in the Qing Dynasty (1793), the hermitage was expanded into a temple. Further renovations were carried out during Emperor Guangxu's reign (1907), including the construction of Xiangyun Road—a 1-kilometer-long pilgrimage path with 1,087 steps winding up to the mountain peak. This path, leading from the rear of Fayu Temple to the summit, has become the main route for pilgrims, who flock here to pay their respects with sincere devotion.

Over the years, Huiji Temple has undergone numerous restorations, eventually becoming the third-largest temple on Mount Putuo. Its most captivating feature is its tranquil location atop the mountain, where the chill of high altitudes and the surrounding mist create a serene atmosphere. Visitors often describe the experience as "walking among the clouds, with the temple seemingly in the heavens," evoking a sense of transcendence and entry into a sacred realm. Due to its elevated position, Huiji Temple is regarded as the highest point and guardian temple of Mount Putuo.

Arriving at Huiji Temple during the Guanyin Dharma Assembly, visitors are greeted by lotus-patterned stone paths symbolizing "lotus blooms with every step." Pilgrims often perform the ritual of bowing every three steps to express their devotion. The temple's activities are particularly grand during this period, with a constant stream of worshippers and the sound of chanting echoing through the clouds, creating a refreshing and serene ambiance. Many pilgrims, after paying homage, sit quietly for a moment, letting the cool breeze soothe their minds and allowing their heavy thoughts to drift away with the wind and clouds. In this meditative flow, the mind becomes clear, inspiration arises naturally, and everything returns to purity and clarity.

In this sacred mountain sanctuary, Huiji Temple combines its tranquil atmosphere and magnificent scenery to offer a profound sense of spiritual healing and architectural beauty. Strolling through its grounds, visitors can experience both inner peace and visual awe, as if the harmony of heaven, earth, and human spirit converges here, creating a journey where spirituality and aesthetics intertwine.
