I found the most peaceful and magical moments by visiting in the late afternoon and staying into the evening. Most of the tour groups and day-trippers leave by then, and the town transforms from a bustling hub into a serene and quiet village. The red lanterns light up the canals and the ancient buildings, casting a warm, romantic glow that is truly enchanting. My main tip is to skip the main entrance and find a smaller side gate to begin your exploration, which is a great way to start away from the main tourist drag. Also, bring some cash, as many of the small vendors and food stalls prefer it, and be sure to wear comfortable shoes for all the uneven cobblestone paths. This is when Zhouzhuang feels most authentic and when you can truly appreciate its timeless beauty.
