The September breeze sweeps across the southeastern edge of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, carrying the coolness and clarity of early autumn, transforming the Rock Road into a magnificent natural gallery. This legendary path winding through the depths of the Hengduan Mountains showcases its most diverse scenery during the transition from late summer to early autumn.
The mountain hues gradually turn golden along the way. The sunlight of early autumn is no longer as scorching as in midsummer; instead, it falls at an angle, casting varying shades of golden light and shadow over the mountains. At higher altitudes, larch trees are the first to don their golden robes, contrasting sharply with the evergreen firs. Meanwhile, the broadleaf forests on the mountain slopes transition from green to yellow, then to red, resembling a spilled palette of colors layered in dazzling brilliance. From any viewpoint, one can see the vibrant bands of forest undulating along the mountain contours, eventually merging into the azure horizon. Crystal-clear mountain streams reflect the fiery autumn leaves on both banks, creating a poetic scene of "trees growing in water, water flowing through the forest."
The autumn colors are not confined to the forests but extend to the fields. Along the way, the barley fields in Tibetan and Qiang villages enter the harvest season, with golden barley shining brightly under the sun, complementing the distant snow-capped mountains and nearby watchtowers. Villagers' busy figures add life to the scene, forming a vivid picture of highland abundance. At dawn and dusk, wisps of smoke rise, filling the valleys with the fragrance of ripe grains and wild fruits—a unique aroma of autumn's bounty.
This is also the season when wildlife is most active on the Rock Road. High-altitude animals like rock sheep and takins begin preparing for winter, often seen foraging on the slopes. In the forests, the colorful feathers of rare birds like blood pheasants and rainbow pheasants occasionally flash by, their calls echoing through the valleys. Plant enthusiasts will find countless surprises here: although alpine rhododendrons have passed their peak bloom, various autumn wildflowers still dot the meadows, and branches are laden with ripe wild fruits, adding extra charm to the journey.
September's climate is just right. The summer rains gradually recede, leaving the sky exceptionally clear and blue. The days are sunny but no longer scorching, with daytime temperatures ranging from 15 to 20 degrees Celsius, offering a comfortable experience. Nights are cool but not yet cold, making it an ideal time for camping and stargazing. With reduced humidity, mountain mist appears at just the right frequency and thickness, often creating a fairyland-like sea of clouds without obstructing the view.
Walking the Rock Road in September feels like strolling through a giant natural painting. Every turn may reveal unexpected beauty, and every breath is filled with the essence of autumn. This is not just a journey but a profound dialogue with nature, a perfect encounter between the soul and the colors of autumn.
