The Leshan Giant Buddha, located on the east bank of the Nanmin River in Leshan City, Sichuan Province, is the largest cliff carving statue in China and one of the world cultural heritages. It is a seated statue of Maitreya Buddha, with a height of 71 meters, a head height of 14.7 meters, and a shoulder width of 24 meters, which is a typical Maitreya Buddha statue. The construction of the Leshan Giant Buddha began in the first year of the Tang Dynasty (713), lasted 90 years, and was completed in the nineteenth year of Zhenyuan (803), initiated by Zen Master Haitong, and completed through the efforts of three generations of craftsmen. The purpose of the construction of the Leshan Giant Buddha is to slow down the turbulent water flow at the confluence of the three rivers in Lingyun Mountain and protect the safety of passing ships. The Giant Buddha is built on the mountain and facing the river, which is majestic and has extremely high historical, cultural and artistic value.
The Leshan Giant Buddha is not only known for its magnificent scale, but also for its exquisite carving craftsmanship and unique geographical location. There are 1,051 in the bun of the Big Buddha, with ears up to 7 meters long, nose 5.6 meters long, fingers 8.3 meters long, and a length of 28 meters from knees to instep. During the construction of the Leshan Giant Buddha, Master Haitong played a key role, and in order to raise funds and manpower, he even gouged out his eyes to show his determination. Later, Wei Gao, the governor of Jiannan Xichuan, also participated in the funding, allowing the project to continue. The completion of the Leshan Giant Buddha is not only a combination of Buddhism and imperial power, but also a symbol of the wisdom and strength of the ancient working people.
