Heshangtao Scenic Area

和尚套景区

The Heshangtao Scenic Area is the most distinctive of the main Sijiao Island scenic areas. During the Tang Dynasty, when Jianzhen, on his voyage to Japan, passed through the Shengsi Sea, a young monk accompanying him, Xuanneng, accidentally fell into the sea and was trapped there for thirty years. Locals later named this area Heshangtao in his memory. The scenic area boasts a wealth of attractions, including the Heshang Stone, Chaoyang Pavilion, Haijiao Teahouse, and Buxu Terrace. A thousand-meter-long wooden plank road runs through the entire area. Strolling along it, you'll be greeted by the ocean below, waves crashing against the rocks on either side, creating a vivid natural landscape of turquoise sea, golden sand, waves, and unique reefs. Within the scenic area, a transparent glass platform juts several meters above the cliff. Standing on this tempered glass platform, you can gaze down at the vast ocean from over ten meters above, feeling as if your feet are standing on air. The thrill of this experience can only be truly appreciated by those who have personally experienced it.

Heshangtao is located at the easternmost end of Shengsi Island. It is a good place to watch the sunrise. Unfortunately, I came here in a hurry and didn’t catch the good weather. I just checked in.

The scenic area's tour route is a circular one. After entering through the ticket gate, a wooden boardwalk leads to the coastline. The initial section is lined with Eurya trees, densely blossoming, some already bearing small black fruit. I later learned that Heshangtao is a botanical reserve, home to many rare and endangered plants. My itinerary was rushed, so I didn't pay much attention. Besides the Eurya, I only saw a large patch of hibiscus chrysanthemums growing on the cliffs below the boardwalk. From a distance, they looked fleshy, but unfortunately, I couldn't photograph them.

There are many things to see along the plank road, with steep cliffs, crashing waves, and rugged rocks.

At the easternmost end there is a "Sunrise Impression" teahouse, which is 360 degrees of glass with no blind spots. The business hours for watching the sunrise are 4:00-8:00, but it seems to be closed during the off-season.

There is a viewing platform on the top of the teahouse, with pointed ends, roughly in the shape of a ship. Standing at the bow of the "ship", you can stage a scene from the Titanic.

There are still many air-raid shelters along the way, but they are no longer useful.

The end of the plank road is the sunrise viewing point, and the sky is also raining. I hurried back, and it was only 400 to 500 meters of asphalt road, and I was back to the starting point.

The ticket is 100, which is a package for the Monk Tour and Liujingtan. Unfortunately, I didn’t have time to go to Liujingtan, which is a bit regrettable.

Located at the easternmost tip of Sijiao Island, it is connected by a wooden plank road carved out of the cliffs. Walking along the wooden plank road, you will see cliffs under your feet, the sound of the blue sea in your ears, and the strange reefs and rocks in your eyes. When the wind is calm, the sky is clear and the sea is blue. When the wind blows, the waves crash against the shore. The unpredictable changes of the sea are fully displayed here, which makes you feel that the world is so big and human beings are so small.

Tickets are sold at the station entrance. A package ticket costs 100 yuan, which includes a 5 yuan bus ticket for the outbound trip. The distance is very short. You can get off the bus and enter the scenic spot, enjoying the distant scenery while walking. You can have a bird's eye view of the sea, which looks particularly beautiful under the blue sky and white clouds.

By Yes, the little fairy is me. |

The main attraction at Heshangtao is the winding seaside boardwalk. The ocean is right below, and the waves crashing against the rocks create a refreshing, soothing sound. Since it's a coastal path, there's little shade, and we were so hot and tired walking that we turned back before we even finished. We bought an ice cream in the scenic area. It costs 2 yuan outside, but here it's 10 yuan. I was stunned when I paid the bill. The bus from Heshangtao to Liujingtan takes only about ten minutes.

By An Xiaonier |

A combined ticket for Liujingtan and Heshangtao is available for 100 yuan per person. After 3:30 pm, you can purchase just the Liujingtan ticket. This combined ticket includes transportation between the two scenic areas. Before entering, ask for the shuttle bus schedule to minimize waiting time. The last bus from Liujingtan to Heshangtao departs at 4 pm, so if you arrive late, be sure not to miss the last bus.

Many people say the scenery at these two places is similar, but I think they're completely different. Liujingtan is actually all about seeing the lighthouse, and there's not much else to see besides that. Heshangtao is mainly about seeing the ocean and the reefs. I personally feel lucky I didn't give up on Heshangtao because it's truly beautiful and worth a visit.

By Half Moon |

The scenery seen from Heshangtao is actually similar to that from Liujingtan. This is probably the reason why package tickets are sold. Otherwise, few people would be willing to visit scenic spots with similar scenery.

There's a free shuttle bus at the Liujingtan exit, also known as the entrance. It's not the usual Yimai or public transport type, but a tourist bus. You'll need to wait in line, which might be a bit long, but it's pretty quick with one bus connecting to another.

The difference from Liujingtan is its terrace, which is located near the exit. Don’t believe the sign that says it’s 500 meters to the exit. In fact, there is a transfer point 500 meters away that is closer to the exit. Fortunately, it’s psychologically comfortable, so please be mentally prepared - the road is long.

To be honest, the monk set is really not my cup of tea. It's just climbing in circles, so tiring!

The climb up the mountain is stair-like and not very difficult, but it doesn’t have any special features and seems a bit boring!

By Lyndsey Z🍭 |

It's a plank road along the coast, quite high, with a glass viewing platform in the middle, but the glass is a bit dirty.

The plank road is very long, with many places to take photos in the middle. The scenery is nice and there are not many people. Tourists with families rarely take photos in such small spots.

By You are with me all the way |

The cold road is great! You can take as many photos as you want, and my friends all think it's so beautiful. We stopped at a pavilion to rest and the staff explained that directly opposite us are Goji Island and Shengshan Island, and to the left are Luhua Island and Flower and Bird Island...

By Nemesis |

We bought a package and took a taxi there. We made sure to keep the driver's phone number. We were proven right. We went to the Monk Package first and then to Liujingtan. We were glad we did because the Monk Package made for much better portraits. The water and boats at Liujingtan were more beautiful. We took a lot of photos on the thousand-meter plank road and got sunburned (important reminder!! Be sure to wear sunscreen and use a parasol!!). When we got back to our place that night and took a shower, we found that our limbs were sunburned. 😂😂 It was too hot to take good photos, so I won't post any pictures of the plank road. There was a convenience store-style rest stop halfway. Just a reminder: glass walls really make you look thinner!! The observation deck on the third floor is also very nice and perfect for taking beautiful photos. When you get to the Heshangtao exit, you have to wait a while before the free bus to Liujingtan arrives. Once you get there, you have to walk a long way inside. Don't believe the signs that say the lighthouse is only 600 meters away. We walked uphill all the way. After walking on the road for at least ten minutes, we had to continue walking on the mountain road that looked like a plank road. After about five or six minutes, we saw a lighthouse in the distance. The waters of Liujingtan were a shade more blue, which was very refreshing. However, the journey was much longer than we imagined. We took a lot of photos at the lighthouse and by the time we got to the exit, we were exhausted...

We started staying at Heshangtao around 1:00 PM and departed for Liujingtan around 4:00 PM, arriving at the exit of Liujingtan at 5:30 PM. Those going there should remember to wear sunscreen, windproof shoes, and flat shoes. You'll get tanned super fast. The wind on the island is much stronger than you might imagine. It's not cold, but it can really help style any hair that's blown. The mountain road back from Liujingtan Lighthouse is paved with cobblestones. Flat-soled cloth shoes or sneakers are essential for easy walking. For those who wear dress shoes, be careful not to wear hard-soled shoes with a slight heel like I did, which drove me crazy. 🙂 🙂 The sunset at the exit of Liujingtan is also beautiful.

By Herbal Jelly |

The scenery of this place is very similar to that of Liujingtan, and the scenery you see is also the same, with reefs of various shapes and plank roads along the coast.

As for why this place is called Heshangtao, I was also very curious at the time. I walked through the entire scenic area but couldn't find any relevant information. Later, I looked up some information online and found that it was because when Jianzhen, a young monk accompanying him on his voyage to Japan, passed through the Shengsi Sea during the Tang Dynasty, he accidentally fell into the sea and was trapped here for 30 years. In his memory, this place was named Heshangtao.

By Yu |

We went to Heshangtao after 3:30 PM. Heshangtao is where Jianzhen made his eastern voyage. The walk along the cliffside plank path took about an hour. The sea wasn't a vibrant blue, and the waves were quite high that day, causing the water to alternate between blue and yellow. The breeze was very pleasant, and since it was a weekend, it wasn't crowded. If you're going at a time like mine, I suggest taking your time to book tickets and just going there might surprise you. There's a bus that runs around the island, and you can also charter a bus, but if you have more time, you can definitely take the bus.

It is said that you should go to Liujingtan to watch the sunrise, but the taxi driver recommended going to Heshangtao. I was lucky enough that although I didn’t see the sun rising from the sea level, the dazzling moment of rising was still very beautiful.

By China-TravelNote users |

A 100 yuan ticket won't get you half a day, which is a terrible value. The scenery is okay, but the facilities are terrible. Two taxis came in half an hour, and even though they weren't metered, I still couldn't get one. No buses showed up, and the exit was full of stranded passengers.

August 2013 Threesome

I had high expectations before coming to Shengsi, but once I got here, I realized it was a real rip-off! Black taxis are rampant, and they don't even use meters, and it's a local custom...

After breakfast, we called a taxi to Heshangtao. The scenery was nice, but after my crazy travels since 2014, I think the scenery here is just average. But it was still a great experience to have the whole place to myself! Also, the Shamatte styling back then was unbearable!

By Miss Moe |

This was once the place where Jianzhen passed by during his voyage to the East. The main route is to walk along the wooden plank road on the cliff, which stretches for a thousand meters and runs through the entire scenic area. There is a glass platform that protrudes a few meters from the cliff, and you can see the sea through the glass. Although the glass is not very transparent, I am afraid of heights and it is not a problem for me.

By Capricorn Tianqi |

The Heshangtao scenic area is basically walking along the plank road in the picture, and there are quite a lot of people...

By Shiyueer7 |

I didn't go to Liujingtan to watch the sunrise, but went to the slightly closer Monk's Nest. Luckily, I saw the sunrise on my first visit! The whole scene was beautiful! The scenery on the island is not inferior to that abroad!

By Mimi Sheep Baby |

The unbeatable open view, with towering boulders on the left and waves crashing against the rocks on the right, is amazing!

By Ink Spinning |

The cliff path is a unique and breathtaking beauty. The natural scenery is good, but transportation is inconvenient.

By Young Master Xiaobai |

It's a breathtaking sight, perhaps due to the scarcity of tourists, preserving its pristine, authentic scenery. Unlike the laid-back, glamorous atmosphere of Thailand's beaches, it instead feels sublime, reminiscent of Meng De's "Viewing the Vast Ocean," imbued with a certain sense of freedom. As I stroll freely along the plank road, taking in the breathtaking scenery, the melancholy of past life gradually dissipates, replaced by a sense of wanderlust.

Because there are few tourists, you can walk the whole way quietly. Very good

By Reminiscence of Summer |

We went there just as a typhoon hit, so there were very few people. The sea had turned yellow from the strong winds and waves, and the weather was either rainy or cloudy at first. Fortunately, it cleared up later. While the sea wasn't as azure as I'd hoped, at least the sky was blue, which was nice. The people there were very welcoming and friendly, and I really enjoyed their local customs.

By Cappuccino |

The Heshangtao trail also involves climbing up and down stairs, then crossing a plank road. The ocean view must be stunning on a clear day, but I can only imagine it. But the scenery on a rainy day is different from usual, so shouldn't we be happy to see something different?

By Victory |

The scenery was nice. Perhaps because it was off-season, the cafe inside was closed, and the shop at the entrance also closed on time. There wasn't much commercial activity.

By Cherries |

We originally wanted to go to Liujingtan, where there's a lighthouse, which would have made the sunrise even more beautiful. We requested Liujingtan, but the taxi driver drove us to Heshangtao instead, saying it was more convenient for him, which was a bit disappointing. The sunrise was still beautiful, but the boardwalk along the sea at Heshangtao was shorter than at Liujingtan, so we didn't spend much time exploring it.

By Spring flowers bloom |

From Linjie, you can watch the sea, listen to the crashing waves, and feel the breath of the ocean. Along the wooden boardwalk, you will see beautiful scenery, azure waters, and rugged rocks. It is breathtaking!

By Careless |

The scenery is really good, and there is no one there in the morning, so there are no people taking photos, which is great.

By Wang Dake1020 |

The sea breeze blows, the plank road walks, the blue sea and blue sky, and then it gets dark

By "Little Demon Lady" |

I got up at 4 o'clock just to go to Heshangtao to watch the sunrise. I got there at the right time (I won't post pictures of the whole sunrise one by one)

By candy |

Super beautiful super beautiful super beautiful super beautiful super beautiful

By Whispering |

I was lucky enough to see the sunrise at Heshangtao. I could walk around the plank road, look at the sea, and feel the breeze. To be honest, there was nothing special about Liujingtan, so I just walked around it.

By Zhong Midu |

We went to Heshangtao and Liujingtan together. Since it's far from Donghai Fishing Village, I shared a car with my roommate. It cost about 200 yuan a day, which was fine for the four of us. We had originally wanted to watch the sunrise at Heshangtao, but the driver said the weather wasn't good, so we didn't get up early. However, we still went early to avoid crowds. A combined ticket for Heshangtao and Liujingtan cost 100 yuan per person. We first went to Heshangtao, which is essentially a plank road, stopping to take pictures of the ocean. The Three-Colored Sea looked a bit strange; the color wasn't very appealing. Afterward, we took the scenic bus to Liujingtan. The lighthouse at Liujingtan is a good spot for posing, but the road was actually quite tricky. The lighthouse is located on a mountainside, and next to it is a very deep, steep, and scary cliff. Haha... We finished both attractions in one morning, and it was a bit tiring...

By Monkey YY |

The cliffs and waves of Heshantao

I suddenly thought of that scene in Twilight

The monk set is okay, but the Liujingtan is useless.

By Double Gun Clownfish |

The mountains are as clear as if they were cut by an axe and the sea is as blue as a sci-fi monster. It's a pity that such a beautiful place has such a confusing name as "Monk's Tale".

By dongmu |

The best place to watch the sunrise at sea is, after all, at the easternmost end of Sijiao Island. It is just a little far away, so those who are not physically fit may not be able to go back and forth with the combined ticket.

By Lynn Lin |

There is a joint ticket for the Heshangtao Scenic Area and the Liujingtan Scenic Area. If you want to go to Liujingtan, it is recommended to go to Heshangtao as well. There is a very long plank road in Heshangtao. People with enough physical strength can try it. If you are weak, you will definitely be exhausted in the hot summer. Looking down from above, the whole scenery is still very beautiful, forming a natural bay, and the sea water beats against the rocks, which is spectacular.

By Calm Night |

This scenic area is even longer than Liujingtan. It is a very long plank road. But it is really beautiful. Whether watching the waves hitting the rocks, or looking at the light blue sea nearby, or looking at the blue sky and blue sea in the distance, the sweat is worth it.

A good place to watch the sunrise and the sea, but some areas are closed and not open to the public due to safety issues!

By Facing the sea |

There is no spectacular scenery in Heshangtao

But it's still worth it, it's very pleasant to walk along the coastal plank road

By lettuce |

I personally think the scenery at Heshangtao is quite nice and it is very cool there.

Walking on the wooden path on the edge of the cliff, there is the sea on one side and the stone cliff on the other; the sea breeze is very cool and comfortable

The Monk's Nest is indeed a great place to cool off!!!

By Blue Rhapsody |

I think it's newly developed, probably to increase its popularity, and they bundled it with Liujingtan to make a package. Since I was there, I also took a walk around there. It felt bluer than Liujingtan and was also very beautiful.

By small small |

The ticket price for the Heshangtao scenic area is 50 yuan per person. When I bought the ticket, I felt like I was being ripped off. I only thought the taxi was cheaper, but I forgot that I had to buy a ticket for the scenic area. The Heshangtao scenic area is mainly characterized by cliffs and waves. After we walked around, we didn't think the ticket was expensive anymore, and we felt it was worth it.

By D-willing |

The Heshangtao Scenic Area is located at the easternmost end of the island. It can only be reached by taxi or by car from Jihu Beach. Public transportation has not yet been established.

By Night Rain in Suzhou |

Another classic not far from Liujingtan, similar to Liujingtan, is a scenic corridor arranged along the coast, but it is more beautiful than Liujingtan.

By Shengsi sea sleeping house |

The car arrived at the Heshangtao Scenic Area, and we bought tickets to enter the scenic area. On one side was the boundless sea, with waves crashing against the shore and a biting sea breeze; on the other side was a thousand-foot-high cliff, with the work of a master's knife. We were walking on a wooden plank road that was sometimes on the ground and sometimes suspended in the air. The plank road was built very neatly and was very comfortable to walk on. We sometimes looked at the cliffs, sometimes at the sea, the sky was vast, and human beings were so small.

By Zhang Yuan |

The only attraction we visited was Heshangtao. We even bought a package ticket that included Liujingtan! Some people love Liujingtan, a great spot for watching the sunrise. However, since we first visited Heshangtao, we were visually fatigued by the azure sky and the endless sea, so we didn't really feel anything when we got to Liujingtan! It's essentially just a boardwalk along the seashore. The entrance fee was 100 yuan, and shuttle service to both attractions was included in the ticket. A note: a bottle of water at the attraction was 5 yuan! Well, that's cheaper than Putuo Mountain! Chartering a car from Donghai Fishing Village to Heshangtao was 100 yuan, or 200 yuan round trip.

By Love is like fleeting time |

I thought there would be a glass plank road like the one in Zhangjiajie, but it turned out to be a wooden plank road all along the cliff, with only a two-square-meter suspended viewing platform, which was still under maintenance... I was so disappointed that I forgot to take a photo...

By vivian |

The trail is basically a cliffside plank road with a glass viewing platform. When the wind is strong, you can feel the glass viewing platform shaking slightly. We hurriedly finished the walk in an hour and were too hot to bear it.

By hbdfd |

Heshangtao is well worth a visit. This newly built scenic area boasts stunning scenery. Walking along the several-kilometer plank road carved into the cliffs is truly breathtaking, and the scenery is breathtaking. Liujingtan and Heshangtao scenic areas have now been merged into the Shengsi Original Ecological Blue Coast Leisure Tourism Resort Belt, offering a single ticket for all, with admission priced at 100 yuan per person.

By Dragon Roar |

It is considered a famous scenic spot in Shengsi. There is a wooden plank road built halfway up the mountain, with the sea below. It is quite tiring to walk along the cliffs.

By Ten cold and nine winters |

This is a great place to watch the sunrise. We started walking down from the middle of the mountain at around 4am and reached the easternmost part of the island to watch this beautiful sunrise. Don't walk too fast. The scenery along the way, the cliffs, the sea with waves. Beautiful!

By Blank grid. |

Then there is the Monk Set. There is a wooden plank road and a glass observation deck which is awesome~!!!

By brown sugar |

It is a package with Liujingtan. If you don't have enough time, I think the monk package is more cost-effective.

By _____________ugltetic |

It's a great idea to combine a ticket to visit Heshangtao and Liujingtan. You don't have to leave just to see the sunrise. Heshangtao has various scenic spots, including Chaoyang Pavilion, the viewing platform, Turtle Rock, the Sea Stone Forest, and the Wooden Fish Rock. The best part is the plank road along the way, with cliffs at your feet, the sound of the waves in your ears, and the feeling of leaning on the railing and enjoying the breeze.

By Light blue |

There are many abandoned military facilities in the scenic area.

The stone forest and rapid waves are the wonders of nature.

The scenic area boasts a spectacular transparent glass viewing platform, jutting several meters above the cliff. From the balcony, you can admire the sea's stone forest, General Rock, and frogs. Standing on the transparent reinforced glass, you can gaze down at the surging ocean from over ten meters above, feeling as if your feet are standing on air.

By Shell |

The monk package is 50 yuan per person, you will not regret it. There is no restaurant in the scenic area because it is on the mountain, so it is best to go there after breakfast or lunch to recharge your energy before setting off.

By Candy |

There is a wooden plank road built along the mountain by the sea, with one side leaning against the mountain and the other facing the sea, which is a unique view. The green vegetation on the mountain wall is lush and vigorous, and it contrasts with the yellow wood of the plank road.

By Mumu |

The scenery near the cliff is like a paradise with the sea and sky merging into one. A small tip for everyone: the Heshangtao Scenic Area is located in a relatively remote place in Shengsi. You must contact the driver in advance and negotiate the round-trip price, and ask him to pick you up later. Otherwise, you will encounter the embarrassment of not having a car to go back.

The scenic area on the cliff is spectacular, but the place is very remote, so you need to make an appointment in advance to take a taxi.

By Tiny |

The ticket price for the Monk Set Scenic Area is 50 yuan per person. I felt like I was being ripped off when I bought the ticket, mainly because of the steep cliffs and the waves. But after we went in and walked around, we didn't think the ticket was expensive anymore. Instead, we felt it was worth it.

By Sunflower Childhood |

Watching the sunrise costs money. It seems to be 40 yuan for watching the sunrise alone. We bought the monk package, which is 100 yuan for the monk package and Liujingtan. Since we showed our student ID, it was only 50 yuan. I feel like this is a good deal, hahahaha

By nibnus |

Personally, I think the monk suite is good. Walking on the seaside boardwalk halfway up the mountain, feeling the sea breeze and looking at the sea view is really relaxing and refreshing.

By The world is beautiful_Aimee |

The original full price ticket was 100 yuan for the monk and six-well pool combo ticket. Since the three of us had tour guide certificates, we only paid 5 yuan for transportation to the two scenic spots. Because it was National Day, we were told that the full price ticket was discounted to 80 yuan. Student tickets were half price.

There are probably two things to do: the beach and the cliffs to see the sea view.

By Nanji indigenous people |

The Heshangtao Scenic Area is located at the easternmost end of the Sijiao Island. Facing the vast East China Sea, the sea and sky are one color. It is an excellent place to watch the sunrise over the sea and see thousands of boats competing.

By rabbit |

Heshangtao is a wooden boardwalk built along the seashore. The weather is also bad, with occasional drizzle, and the "blue" coastline is not visible.

By mimiyihao |

Just walk along the plank road, and you can see below through the gaps. It looks scary. There is also a glass plank road in the middle.

By Middle-aged backpacking |

Liujingtan and Heshangtao scenic areas are merged together. If you are tired of walking in Liujingtan, it is very pleasant to go to Heshangtao to feel the sea breeze and listen to the sound of waves.

It's a great spot to watch the sunrise. It would have been nice if there weren't so many clouds that morning. What a pity...

There is a long wooden plank road around the island

Monk's sunrise viewing: (Ticket price: 40 yuan/person)

The fog was very heavy that day. Looking east, the vast sky was filled with a layer of light white fog. After a while, a small piece of red light appeared in the depths of the white clouds, dyeing the white clouds on the horizon red. In the distance of the white fog, there was a light, peach-colored cloud.

A taxi cost 50 yuan, and the entrance fee was 40 yuan. The ticket was originally included with the Six Wells Pond for 100 yuan, but the Six Wells Pond was under renovation and closed. Heshangtao is well worth a visit, with beautiful scenery. Taking the bus back to Donghai Fishing Village involves a long walk downhill. When I got out, a chartered van happened to be available. After negotiating with them, they agreed to share the ride, adding the fare to the driver, so the cost was only 10 yuan (good luck!). Otherwise, a taxi back to Donghai Fishing Village for 50 yuan would have been a huge waste. I arrived at Heshangtao Scenic Area at 4:30 PM, a bit late, and everyone was heading back. It's recommended to go early.

Heshangtao Scenic Area[1] is located at the easternmost end of Sijiaoshan Island, Sijiao Island in Shengsi Islands. It faces the vast East China Sea and is an excellent place to watch the sunrise and thousands of boats competing at sea.

It is said that Heshangtao has only been developed for more than a year, and there don’t seem to be many tourists. Moreover, several scenic spots are not open to the public and are still being improved!

But I really think this place is worth a visit. The sea water is bluer than that of Liujingtan.

The altitude of Heshangtao seems to be a little higher than that of Liujingtan. Personally, I think the scenery is also higher. Maybe because the name is not as nice as Liujingtan, it has become its subsidiary attraction.
