Houtouwan Village

后头湾村

Huangcun boasts the best water quality on both islands. Covered in creepers, it resembles a lost town hidden in the mountains. Facing the sea, the village is deserted. Because the former village site is adjacent to a cemetery, locals once dubbed it the "Ghost Village." Due to long-term inactivity, many of the small buildings built during the village's heyday have fallen into disrepair. Lin Fazhen's family and the only two remaining households have shown no interest in renovating them. Each building is now entangled in vines and creepers. Combined with the pervasive greenery of trees and shrubs, Houtouwan is now known as the fairytale "Wizard of Oz," attracting scores of tourists seeking its natural beauty.

Goji Island is famous for its scenic spots - the No Man's Village (Houtouwan Village). It sounds scary, but in fact, this village is just a long history. Later, due to years of disrepair, the villagers moved elsewhere and built new houses, leaving this part of the village as an uninhabited village. Of course, I also searched Baidu in advance.

There are two ways to visit the deserted village. One is to simply visit the observation deck to take in the entire view, as the houses are practically covered in lush greenery – a truly beautiful sight! The other is to walk around the village – and pay attention! I mean walking! Because the village is deserted! Of course, both options require a fee, and the walk into the village takes over two hours. In the scorching heat, a two-hour walk wasn't practical, so we opted for the first option, which was to just visit the observation deck to take in the view.

In 2002, Houtouwan Village was officially relocated and merged into Minfu Village. Here, the abandoned old houses became an unexpected deserted village.

For over twenty years, aside from a few farmers operating small shops at the village entrance, Houtouwan Village has been virtually deserted. Instead, the verdant houses seamlessly blend into the lush mountainside, creating a scene. From the walls still untouched by greenery, you can see the colorful tiles creating a variety of patterns, and the spiral staircases boasting intricate details. Each house has a unique decor and feel. How cherished these houses were back then. But now, they all look equally dilapidated, cracked, abandoned, and collapsing one after another... Everywhere, greenery has swallowed up the original dwellings, and everywhere, houses are covered in collapsed roofs, doors, and windows. It feels like a perfect place to film a horror movie!

Besides the stunning "Wizard of Oz" feel of creepers growing in every household, Houtouwan Village is also remarkable for its location. Chinese architecture is often designed to be nestled against mountains and water, then oriented north and south. Houtouwan Village follows suit, facing the sea and backed by hills. However, these hills are home to exquisitely constructed tombs (though I'm not superstitious, I'm not so sure about photographing tombs, so I didn't take any close-up photos). The tombs cover a vast area, giving it the feel of a cemetery (perhaps due to the relocation of people). The village is surrounded by tombs, and with its proximity to the sea, the air is humid. From a distance, the wisps of steam rising from the hills carry a deeply eerie atmosphere (I briefly wondered if the relocation of villagers was related to the excessive number of tombs. While young people may be leaving for work and transportation, the warm climate here is ideal for retirement). I remember reading a travelogue in Shengsi that described the eerie nature of this place.

Two pieces of advice for those visiting the village: First, going up and down the mountain is quite strenuous. The bluestone steps are steep and difficult to walk on, so be sure to wear comfortable sneakers! Second, bring mosquito repellent. Long sleeves and long pants are recommended, as there are many mosquitoes here, the bay is very windy, and you should avoid getting scratched by sharp plants.

How did the deserted village become an internet celebrity?

In June 2015, a group of photos taken by a netizen of the former Houtouwan Village in Shengshan Town, Shengsi County were posted online. The photos quickly spread and occupied the headlines of major media. The once lonely Houtouwan became famous overnight and gradually attracted many tourists.

The ivy everywhere here has turned it into the most eye-catching "Wizard of Oz". The Houtouwan Uninhabited Village has been rated by foreign media as one of the most beautiful abandoned attractions in the world.

Tickets:

There was no entrance fee here originally, but as more people came, it became a profitable place that charges fees.

It costs 10 yuan per person to go to the observation deck to see the panoramic view, and 50 yuan per person to enter the village. In fact, if you only buy a ticket for the observation deck, no one will check it after you enter the village. Charging 50 yuan for a place that is not maintained is really a waste of money.

Be careful not to go at any time, especially on cloudy days or at night when there is insufficient light. The scenery isn't very pretty, and the most important thing is that the hillside at the entrance to the village is covered in graves, even around the viewing platform. It's definitely going to be eerie if the weather is bad.

Transportation: You can only take a black car, the transportation is very inconvenient

Houtouwan Village, also known as the "No Man's Village," has undergone tremendous changes over time. With the relocation of its inhabitants, the original village has been deserted, leaving the abandoned old houses uninhabited for years, slowly "devoured" by lush vegetation. Eventually, it transformed into an unexpected "Wizard of Oz" scene. This was later discovered and shared online, making the remote Goji Island a household name. There are two tour routes: one offers a panoramic view from the observation deck, priced at 20 yuan per person, and the other descends the mountain into the village, priced at 50 yuan per person.

The abandoned village is covered with creepers, like the Wizard of Oz in the fairy tale, a very beautiful natural landscape

By The shining sun god |

From the top, you can see the whole picture of the deserted village. Walking down, you can see the sea and the waves. Walking inside, you can see the four seasons...

By Three daughters |

The village and the sea are in full view, like an unreal dream.

After looking at the publicity and photos, the ghost village, the secret fishing village, and the Wizard of Oz really seem to have the potential to be hyped up as an internet celebrity.

Although it is not as good as the internet celebrities like "Ordinary Road" or "Passing by the World", it is enough to dominate the Goji Island.

The Houtouwan Village, built on the mountainside and surrounded by greenery, is a unique view of Goji Island that cannot be seen in Xiamen, Qingdao and Southeast Asia.

Houtouwan Village was built on the seaside and has been home to fishermen for generations. It must have been a densely populated and prosperous village at one time.

Being abandoned is an exaggeration. The natural loss of young labor force is no different from the current situation in any 18th-tier village or town.

The stairs are cumbersome to go up and down and the location is remote, so the elderly gradually moved out.

It just happens to be such a secluded paradise.

From the aerial perspective, the orientations of the buildings are rather messy, but they are densely packed and scattered, with each house close to each other, which is quite spectacular.

The houses are all made of bricks, not stones, which shows that people live and work in peace and contentment. Moreover, the quality is good and they have not been deformed by wind and rain.

Green vegetation surrounds me and mosquitoes are ferocious. The guide's suggestion to wear long pants is true.

Although it is tiring to play, it is fun to shuttle alone between the quiet paths and multi-story buildings and enjoy the clean space to yourself.

The ivy wraps around the blue-gray brick wall, and its dense shade is scattered but indistinguishable from each other. This is the true love that lasts until death.

Even though it is barren, looking up at the blue and open seashore, I feel countless times that these are all ready-made sea view villas.

If the inconvenience of walking up the stairs can be solved, each building has the potential to become an internet celebrity Airbnb.

Once a bustling fishing village, it has now become a fairytale wonderland. When overseas media outlets compiled a list of the world's most beautiful abandoned scenic spots, only two in China made the list: the Great Wall and this place.

This remote fishing village once had more than 3,000 fishermen living here and even had a school.

Now the entire village is covered with ivy, facing the sea, but deserted, as if forgotten by the world. However, it has now become an internet sensation and a popular tourist destination, as it resembles a green fairytale world.

By Inter-tour |

Facing the sea, this village is covered in green trees and shrubs, earning it the nickname "The Wizard of Oz" online! The village is covered in greenery, resembling a lost town hidden in the mountains. Since no one has lived here for a long time, the many small buildings that were once built in the village have been abandoned, each entangled in vines and creepers, hence the name! You can choose to take panoramic photos from the viewing platform or walk into the village.

The small village covered with ivy was originally called Houtouwan, but now everyone calls it the No-Man Village.

[Transportation Guide] We stayed on Goji Island and recommend taking the island's public bus. The bus runs every 20 minutes from Goji King Village to Shengshan Aquatic Market, with a fare of 2-3 kilos per person. From the market, you can take a taxi or tricycle to the uninhabited village. Chartering a car costs 30 kilos, while sharing a car with four or more people costs 10 kilos per person. During normal times, taxis are available at the parking lot at the entrance to the uninhabited village, so chartering a car is unnecessary. Our group of two traveled from Goji to the village and back again, costing 28 kilos per person. Chartering a car for a transfer is reportedly over 100 kilos, which is quite a rip-off. Walking from Shengshan Town is even more undesirable: it's a 4-kilometer uphill climb, flanked by cemeteries.

[Tips] The entrance fee to the observation deck is 20 kilos, while the entrance to the village is 50 kilos. We recommend entering the village. You can only take photos of the distant scenery from the observation deck, while you can only capture the houses completely covered in ivy from inside the village. It's definitely tiring, though. Going up and down the mountain is strenuous. The bluestone steps are steep and difficult to navigate, so be sure to wear comfortable sneakers! I was wearing 4cm shoes, and the walk down was incredibly daunting. I really regretted not wearing flats.

We were so frightened by the numerous travel guides mentioning the high mosquito count that we immediately put on long sleeves and long pants and smeared ourselves with mosquito repellent lotion and floral spray. However, perhaps because we went in late September and the weather had already cooled, there were very few mosquitoes and we didn't get bitten. However, I still recommend wearing long sleeves and long pants. Firstly, it's a bay area and the wind is quite strong, so it's a bit chilly in autumn. Secondly, it's important to avoid getting scratched by sharp plants.

Although it is not hot, the sun is very strong and the sea breeze is very strong. Umbrellas and sun hats are not recommended as they can be easily blown away by the wind. Bring sunscreen with a factor of 50 or above and remember to apply it every two hours.

There is no need to bring too much food, there is a canteen in the scenic area, but you must remember to bring water. I bought a cup of sea stone flower in the scenic area, which has a very cool jelly taste, like the taste of mint candy when I was a child, 10 pop a cup.

We walked down the valley to the bay, which ended at the bottom. The walk down and taking photos took about half an hour. We recommend retracing the route we took on the return trip; there's another path that seems to lead to the East Cliff, but it's quite steep, so be careful. Someone mentioned taking a boat into the village, but I didn't see any, so I decided it would be safer to walk down. We were pressed for time, so the climb back up took only 10 minutes instead of the usual 30. I was exhausted, gasping for air, and felt like I was half dead.

Back in Shengshan Town, you can go to the seafood market to buy seafood and have it processed on the side to replenish your energy. For tips on the seafood market, you can refer to my other reviews.

Four stars. The village is now uninhabited and the houses are covered with ivy. It has become a shooting location for many photography enthusiasts. Along the way, we also saw many foreign tourists coming here to play.

By Small size without ponytail |

At the entrance of Houtouwan Village, you'll see numerous graves. If I were to visit alone, I'd still be a bit intimidated. Fortunately, with the increase in tourists, the village now has a small shop that serves noodle-style lunches. There's also a bathroom, so it's pretty well-equipped. Also, many of the houses are dilapidated, so you'll usually just take photos from the side streets and admire them from a distance, rather than entering them to explore (some even removed their doors when the villagers moved). Perhaps they find it a unique experience to see their former homes transformed into tourist attractions (after all, 50 yuan a ticket isn't cheap!). Mineral water in the village is 5 yuan a bottle, so it's recommended to bring your own water.

It’s a bit of a mysterious wonderland, well worth exploring, and it could also produce a blockbuster film.

By Tiantian Story dd |

Due to inconvenient transportation, villagers have moved away one after another. Year after year, ivy has quietly occupied the entire village on the walls and under the eaves. At first glance, it looks like the residence of elves in fairy tales, full of mystery.

By Duoduo |

The deserted village is just empty houses and creepers. The online art is called "The Wizard of Oz". There are no immortals. There are many tombs next to it. I am timid and I only dare to look at it from the terrace. The scenery is not bad. Fortunately, I did not enter the village. I met many people who had entered the village and came out on the way and said not to go in because it is not fun.

By pancakes |

It is one of the must-see attractions in your lifetime. It is also a very popular attraction. Many people have seen pictures of it a long time ago, but don’t know where it is.

It's a little hard because you have to go up and down stairs, which is equivalent to about ten to twenty floors. It's more tiring than climbing the Great Wall.

In addition, the vegetation is dense, so be careful to prevent mosquitoes.

By Catching Anxious Bears |

This village by the sea has become a paradise for creepers and other plants as the young people left behind to work away from home and the elderly gradually died. The ancestral houses in this village have gradually fallen into disrepair and eventually no one has taken over. Day after day, year after year, the fame of The Wizard of Oz spread, attracting people from all over the world to visit. The deserted village is no longer deserted because of tourists, but these sea view houses nestled in the mountains and by the water have become vacant and stand there in ruins.

The entrance to the uninhabited village is a short distance past a series of graves. Locals told me that there's no cremation here; after death, the body is buried directly, slowly decomposed by time. Therefore, the graves here are larger than those typically associated with cremation. These ancestors, who guarded their hometowns during their lifetime, now welcome visitors with a different kind of welcome, lining the streets. Visitors entering the village are a form of homage.

By White Bone Princess |

There's no direct bus service to the uninhabited village, a drawback of the island. The various tourist attractions aren't connected by bus, so taxis are the only option. Due to the steep slopes and poor transportation, the villagers have all moved out, leaving the village empty and overrun by creepers. The entire village, lush and green, became a must-see for tourists thanks to the film, and is a must-see for visitors. Strolling through the village, you'll find both beauty and horror. After sunset, there are no tourists, so it's still quite a trek.

By Pinellia↘️Song |

The viewing platform costs 20 yuan. I brought toilet water this time, hahaha, but I still got bitten a few times. Because this village is far from the town and transportation is inconvenient, people began to move out in 1992. By 1995, everyone had moved out and it became an uninhabited village. The abandoned houses were covered with ivy, which really has a unique flavor. It takes about an hour to walk through the whole village. In summer, it is best to go early to avoid the sun. Foreigners seem to like this village more. There are many foreigners. This village was also the filming location of the horror movie "Cannibal Island". You can watch it first.

Looking down at the scenery here, does this village surrounded by mountains look a lot like the village in "Your Name"?

Houtouwan Village is located in the northeast of Shengshan Island, in a low-lying area between two straits. It is surrounded by mountains on three sides and faces the sea to the north. It was once an important coastal access point and a bustling fishing village. However, in the 1990s, due to the inconvenience of transportation, many people chose to move away. Later, in 2002, Houtouwan Village was relocated as a whole, and the place was deserted. ***Once you climb the steps here, you will understand why the villagers moved away***

After everyone left, the creeper quietly took over the entire village. Walking down the stone path, I gradually went deeper into this quiet village. When I looked up, I found myself in the fairy tale "The Wizard of Oz"!

By 💓Mother Bear✨🐻 |

A real-life version of The Wizard of Oz. Due to the inconvenience of entering and exiting the village, the villagers moved away one after another. Later, the ivy spread throughout the village. People were attracted by the green at the beginning.

The viewing platform in the uninhabited village costs 20 yuan per person (cash only), with children 1.2-1.5 meters tall paying half price. Entering the village costs 50 yuan per person. Please remember to wear long pants and spray mosquito repellent when entering the uninhabited village, as the mosquitoes there are very fierce.

I have read countless articles and travel guides about this beautiful island, and every time I see the beautiful pictures sent by friends who love traveling, I always feel itchy. I have almost figured out the itinerary, and the guide is almost done, but I haven’t actually gone on a trip. This is also the trip that I have prepared for the longest time. There are always many things in life that entangle us. Traveling is becoming more and more a luxury. Fortunately, I always stick to the things I like. There are always beautiful things for us to pursue, right!

Whether it was a coincidence or God's will, a group of dreamy pictures on the Internet made this village, which had been forgotten by humans and silent for many years, become an "Internet celebrity" in an instant.

That fairytale green, that mystery behind the mist, haunts me. I finally can't contain my yearning—"I've crossed the ocean to see you." After "delighting in what I've encountered, finding what I have temporarily, and finding contentment," that abandoned bay, that building draped in green, seems like a "cup" planted in my heart, enchanting me.

The green brocade-like ivy is simply a highly skilled beautician. It uses seaweed masks to cover up the old and mottled appearance of the houses, and dresses up the deserted village as a "net celebrity face", winning the admiring eyes of tourists from all over the world.

Thus, like Sleeping Beauty awakening, the deserted village became a "populated village" overnight! The islanders who had once abandoned their homes, seeing the business opportunities presented by the tourists seeking out the deserted village, returned to their ancestral home and set up a fee at the gate, requiring visitors to leave a toll. Entering the village, you'll see three or five administrators wearing red armbands, resembling a "bound-foot scout team," though it's unclear what they oversee. I suppose charging fees is a way of keeping up with the times.

By Just .W |

Originally the largest and wealthiest village on Shengshan Island, it later became a place of retreat due to transportation issues and other factors, leaving behind houses covered in ivy. The entrance fee is 20 yuan from the viewing platform and 50 yuan to enter the village, with students receiving half price with a student ID.

By Johnson Yan |

From the observation deck at the entrance, you can overlook the entire village. The blue sky, the valley, and the sea complement each other beautifully, and the green trees and shrubs that surround the village create a breathtaking view. Long abandoned, the abandoned houses are entwined with vines and creepers, blending seamlessly with nature.

Since almost no one has entered the village in recent years, it has almost become a "kingdom of plants".

By Xiao Xi |

The 50-yuan entrance fee includes access to the village from the platform. Before setting off, be sure to apply some mosquito repellent or something. The deserted village is overgrown with plants and insects, so wearing long sleeves and long pants is recommended. From the platform, overlooking the entire village, mist shrouds the forest. Walking along the path into the village, vines cling to the houses, sunlight streams down, creating a "Wizard of Oz"-like experience. The village has been deserted for many years, uninhabited, with the islanders relocating to the town. Naturally, this place is frequented by adventurers, whose immaculate photos showcase its unique beauty and a longed-for tranquility.

By Vurtual |

If you want to go to the deserted village, you have to pass a large cemetery. There is no public transportation to reach it. The only way to go up the mountain is to hike or take a local bus. It feels gloomy on the top of the mountain. When you enter the village, there are villagers blocking the road to collect a fee of 50 yuan per person. The ticket seller will not give you a ticket, but only give you something like an invoice. You can imagine that all the ticket money went into private pockets. When I argued with those villagers, they were very arrogant and unreasonable, saying that the village collected it. I called the Shengshan Tourism Complaint Hotline, but no one answered. It felt very, very bad. I only walked around a small circle after entering with the ticket, and I was really unhappy.

By Crossing the paths and hills |

There is no entrance fee at the moment, but the ivy is not yet at its peak summer condition. It is still very beautiful though.

By Hero |

The scenery is beautiful from a high place. You can skip stones on the small mudflats below for more than an hour. Be careful with sun protection.

By Chen Xiaomeng |

We boarded the boat and started to circle the island, heading towards Houtouwan Village.

I even encountered seagulls at the Sanjiaojiang Bridge, but it was already 4 pm.

This old fishing village, which was forgotten by the world due to the reform and opening up, has now come into the public eye again because of the ivy all over the mountain.

And we are one of the tourists flocking here.

By Unknown Legend |

Houtouwan Village has become a popular online tourist attraction. The villagers' abandoned old houses have been largely replaced by greenery. It's recommended to visit on a sunny day for the best views from above. However, it's quite remote, so taxis are generally the only way to get there. Taxi fares on the island are quite expensive, so try to group up if possible. It's also best to give the driver your number, otherwise you might not even be able to get a taxi when you need to return.

By Mimi Sheep Baby |

I went there early in the morning and the scenery was beautiful. It is located at the foot of the mountain. Now you can only see it from the viewing platform halfway up the mountain. You cannot enter the village. But the tranquility of the uninhabited village is intoxicating, as if everything has stopped.

By Cloud, lemon scent |

One of the must-see classics. We didn't need tickets when we went there. I don't know if they will be charged later. The scenery is beautiful.

By Toast pineapple buns |

On the first day on the island, I was tricked into doing all sorts of things. I lost all interest.

Plus, the internet says the island's largest beach, Dawang Beach, is... just too awful... I don't want to go to any of the other attractions like Xiaoxitian (Little Western Paradise) anymore. (I don't want to be ripped off by taxis anymore, and the whole point of coming to Goji Berry is to visit the deserted village anyway.)

I'd seen the announcement online. There was a ticket booth next to the Shengshan Hotel. Since this cafe was also right next to the hotel (on the right), I didn't think much of it. The owner then started to ramble. He said the regular boat was 100 yuan per person, but you couldn't stay in the deserted village for long, just to have a look around, and then they'd kick you off. Instead, they told us to take their private boat, which offered more flexible travel time. We were there just to take photos, and we were tired of being ripped off, so we fell for it. We ended up settling on a 300 yuan round-trip price. But because it was a private boat, we got into an argument with the village management as soon as we entered. The staff wouldn't let us off, and the aunt who was leading us had to argue with them before they let us off. Ugh, it was even more frustrating...

I suggest you buy your ticket at the official boarding point. It's on the left side of Shengshan Hotel! (However, I don't know how long you can stay there. However, there are many mosquitoes, so if you don't have a strong desire to take pictures, you won't be able to stay for long.

By Smile |

The entire scenic spot was covered with ivy, a sea of green, and the sky was gloomy, so the photos taken were not very good.

There are not many tourists here, especially in the evening. It feels a bit eerie walking inside, so timid tourists should go early.

Others say there are a lot of mosquitoes here, but we applied toilet water and it seems there are no mosquitoes.

By Feifei |

I woke up at 6 a.m., braving 35-degree heat. After a three-hour boat ride, it took almost eight hours to get there. And then I was charged! Not only that, but I was only allowed to go to the viewing platform! If you sneak down, you'll be caught! The land route is closed, and the waterway to the village is 100 yuan per person! If you just want to visit the deserted village, forget it. I've already wasted a wonderful weekend on this awful place.

By Meow |

The ivy-covered houses scattered around are the legendary deserted village. Because the village is so high and transportation is difficult, the villagers have moved away one by one, leaving it a deserted city. Starting in June, admission fees have been added. We went up the mountain directly, paying 20 yuan, but could only look down from the artificial platform; staff prevented us from descending.

The panoramic view of the village is all about the houses built on the hills by the sea. It feels like the feng shui is excellent.

It is still spectacular despite being densely packed.

If you want to enter the village and get in close contact with the village, you can only take a small boat ferry. It costs 100 yuan per person for a round trip. There are too many mosquitoes. It is recommended to wear long pants to enter the village, otherwise you will be bitten to death.

It's like a fairytale world. The water there is the most beautiful on the island. You can even watch the sunset from a high point. However, there are a lot of mosquitoes, so be careful when visiting.

The water quality in Houtou Bay is the best I've seen on Goji Island. It's absolutely stunning! Even in June, the deserted village is already covered in creepers, and the vast expanse of houses is shrouded in greenery. You might not see such a stunning sight anywhere else. There are still two or three families in the village selling food. The descent was easy, but the return trip, after climbing hundreds of steps, was a bit tiring.

By Blurred eyes |

It is a deserted village with scenery like The Wizard of Oz. It is worth a visit. Apply mosquito repellent.

By *^_^* |

An unusual view, with no one living and only green growing wildly. It's worth a visit, but it will be a bit tiring.

By Aunt's Loli |

No one has lived there for many years. There are two ways to see it: take a boat tour and hike up the mountain. There are a lot of bugs in the village, which is disgusting.

Last summer, I saw in the newspaper that there was a small island in the Shengsi Archipelago. The houses in a small village by the sea were densely covered with ivy. The whole view was green. The words "The Wizard of Oz" popped into my mind immediately.

So, after silently planting the seed in my heart for a year, I finally set foot on this island on May Day.

A Japanese netizen shared the photos, saying, "If Harry Potter had filmed here, it would have been very popular." The tweet has already garnered over 30,000 likes and 20,000 retweets. Japanese netizens exclaimed, "This is the fairytale wonderland they imagined, the Wizard of Oz."

Houtouwan Village, in fact, has already gained widespread fame in China since last year. It has been described as a fairytale world, a mysterious "ghost village," and a deserted island where nature has returned.

Shengshan Island is the easternmost inhabited island along the Chinese coast and the center of the famous Zhoushan fishing ground. Houtouwan Village is located in the northeast of Shengshan Island and was established in 1950.

In the 1990s, due to inconvenient land transportation and narrow living areas, residents gradually moved to town centers where the population was more concentrated and life was more convenient. In 2002, the deserted Houtouwan village was officially withdrawn and merged into Minfu Village.

After nearly 20 years of transformation, Houtouwan Village, thanks to its unique location and moisture, has become a landscape of lush green vines. With only one or two households remaining, nature has returned to the area, with ivy covering the walls, blending seamlessly with the green hills. This has attracted an increasing number of tourists and photographers.

Now, due to the increasing number of tourists, the ivy on the abandoned houses is no longer as lush as in the photos. But I think it is still worth a visit.

Houtouwan Village: A time-forgotten village on Shengshan Island, Houtouwan Village gained fame thanks to a photo online depicting the uninhabited fishing village, covered in creeping ivy, resembling a green fairytale. It's now a must-see destination on any Shengshan trip. Last year, I was equally captivated by the photos and have longed to visit this mysterious, fairytale-like "ghost village."

The drive from Dongya Cliff to Houtouwan Village takes about half an hour. Road construction is ongoing along the way, but I give a thumbs up to the local government; the thick concrete pavement, with steel bars interspersed throughout, promises to withstand the elements. The winding road to Houtouwan Village requires a downhill walk through numerous graveyards, which is quite eerie and eerie.

Arriving at the mouth of the col, the locals have built a viewing platform in an open area for visitors to take panoramic photos of the fishing village. This is a typical island fishing village, with houses built along the slope, extending from the bay to the mountainside. However, now that the villagers have been relocated to Shengshan Town, the houses have been abandoned. Sadly, the spring ivy hasn't even sprouted, leaving the entire village bare, dilapidated, and desolate. There's no particularly beautiful scenery, let alone the sight of "green fields and floating paths," which is a bit disappointing. But since we're here, we decided to walk down to the village to explore. The first thing we saw was a Dragon King Palace, still offering some incense. Next to it was a house inhabited by an elderly woman.

Walking down the mountain road, paved with coarse cobblestones, many of the houses are two- and three-story concrete structures, suggesting a well-off life in those days. Locals say that in the 1970s and 1980s, thanks to the abundance of seafood and shellfish, the average income for fishermen here reached 20,000 yuan! Later, as they became more affluent, finding travel difficult, they gradually moved to the bustling town. Eventually, the entire village was abandoned, leaving only a cemetery at the entrance and a few mourners.

As I was shooting, I suddenly had an idea: why not shoot in black and white mode? Wouldn’t it highlight the vicissitudes and decline of this place? So, I changed the mode and took a different picture.

After 20 minutes of wandering around and taking enough photos, we headed back. The climb up took another 10 minutes, and we sat for a while at the entrance to the Dragon King Palace. After snapping one last photo, we took the bus to Goji Island. While it wasn't the best season, I didn't get to capture the "Green Fields" scene, but the black and white shots were pretty good.

Tips: Visiting Houtouwan Village in summer is best, as you won't see the "Green Fields" (or "Wandering Footprints"). Be sure to take mosquito repellent measures during the summer, or you'll be bitten to death. Also, don't visit alone after dark; there are many cemeteries here, which can be terrifying!

It is also called the deserted village because it is inconvenient to enter and exit the village, so no one lives there now after everyone moved out.

When we went there, workers were building a platform. Maybe it will be developed into a tourist attraction in the future, and it may be fenced off and charged a fee.

Many horror movies were filmed here. I think it would be more exciting if you come here at dusk.

Be careful of the big mosquitoes, the mosquitoes in the deserted village are terrible

By Dark Horse |

On Shengshan Island, there were originally residential houses, but due to inconvenient transportation, the residents moved away, leaving only empty houses. There's currently no entrance fee, but there may be in the future. Visit in the summer to see the houses covered in lush green ivy. The road to the deserted village is quite steep, and getting in and out feels like climbing a mountain.

By Flower Child 690 |

The scenery is beautiful, but the transportation is so inconvenient that it's almost fatal. Elderly people should definitely not go there.

By ~Hehe~Adan¥ |

Girls must wear long sleeves and long pants when going there, as there are a lot of mosquitoes in the summer.

There are still many cemeteries here. Fortunately, there are more people traveling here now, so it doesn’t feel so eerie.

Actually, it’s just looking at the creeper, creeper, and then you are also climbing a mountain...

Located on the northeastern side of the Beishan Mountain, in Houtouwan, the "No Man's Village" is also known as the "Desolate Village." In the 1970s and 1980s, thanks to the abundance of a particular type of seafood and shellfish, locals became wealthy from daily fishing, with per capita income reaching 20,000 yuan. This was 20,000 yuan back in the 1970s and 1980s! With this wealth, daily needs were not met, and travel became inconvenient. Gradually, some villagers moved to the bustling town, and their neighbors gradually followed suit. Now, only a cemetery at the entrance remains, along with a few mourners. The original inhabitants left behind, but the tenacious and resilient plants continued to thrive in the village for years, transforming it into the "Wizard of Oz"-like landscape it is today. In the misty mornings, it resembles a fairyland, but we were not able to witness it. The mosquitoes are numerous, fierce, and fierce!

I'd heard about this abandoned village before, and as a horror movie lover, the mystery of deserted villages was something I longed for. But once I arrived, it felt like just another ordinary village, albeit with creepers covering the walls and the expanse of green still being beautiful. Facing the ocean, with the mountains at its back, vines covered the ruins, and the contrast between the green and the blue of the sea was breathtaking! Walking through it felt like being in "The Wizard of Oz."

To get to the deserted village, you need to walk down the mountain. Just follow the stone steps down the mountain. It's a bit difficult to climb up.

By Sea breeze boat |

The deserted village of Houtouwan got the name The Wizard of Oz because the ivy covered the uninhabited houses. It is now a very popular tourist attraction in Shengshan. It is really nice to take photos there.

By Xiao Linzi |

I think it's a great place for taking photos. The scenery is really beautiful. I can walk around and take photos for about an hour. Of course, some people think it's not interesting. The key is to see the scenery and the mood of seeing the scenery. If you are willing to explore, there are beautiful scenery everywhere.

By pm.C |

It wasn't particularly scary, but the empty house still had the air of someone living there, which reminded me of a horror movie. The low pressure was oppressive and intense.

By Barbarians at the Gate |

It is so beautiful, really so beautiful, the extreme blue + the extreme green, it is so beautiful that it takes your breath away. I must recommend everyone to go there, but it must be a sunny day, otherwise the deserted village will be a bit eerie.

By Hu Liangliang |

It's a local specialty, worth exploring, but don't expect too much.

By moli.W |

The first time I saw it, I thought of Hayao Miyazaki's Castle in the Sky. It's a quiet little harbor. Standing on the top of the hill overlooking the sea, you can almost hear the sound of the waves. You can bring a shovel and a net to catch seafood yourself, but it's very expensive in town.

By Dingdang Xibi |

It's a green and refreshing place. It feels great.

The deserted village is indeed still inhabited, though only by an elderly couple. Due to its proximity to the sea, the humidity is high, and access is inconvenient thanks to the stone steps, which also have poor communication. The houses are covered in bishan lilies. The misty, fairy-like atmosphere of the seashore, the occasional tsunami, and the barking of dogs all add to the sense of adventure, a vague sense of the village's mystique and the surprise of stumbling upon a fairyland. The occasional tourists we encounter even tease us about the presence of female ghosts or vixen in the village. But the scenery is truly beautiful, even more so when deserted. It was raining when we visited, and upon entering the village, we found only four young women, an elderly couple, and their faithful little dog companion. The village is dotted with small paths, but most are now covered in weeds. These paths were once prosperous, the most frequently traveled paths in the village, but now quietly forgotten. Only the approaching tsunami still calls back to its former glory. Even though it is now deserted, it remains a place that has never been forgotten.

Very beautiful, like a fairy tale, like a dream. Looking forward to coming again~

It was winter when we went, so there wasn't much ivy or anything like that. The atmosphere was still a bit eerie. We didn't go deep into the mountain and only took some photos halfway up the mountain. Those who are interested should still go inside to explore. The driver drove us up a steep uphill road towards the deserted village. The roads in Shengshan are very narrow, only wide enough for two cars to drive side by side, and there are many bends. Those who drive by themselves must pay attention to driving safety and remember to slow down when turning.

The car drove along the mountain road for a while, and the driver stopped the car in an open space. He pointed to a small temple at the foot of the slope not far away and told us that we could see the deserted village when we walked to the small temple, but we should not walk too far, as there were many steps to go down to the deserted village. If we walked too far, it would be difficult to return if we were not in good physical condition.

Walking down the hill, there is a well-maintained cemetery. After passing the small temple, the view in front of you suddenly opens up.

This place faces the sea, yet it's deserted. Because the village's former site is adjacent to a cemetery, locals used to call it the "Ghost Village." Long desolate, it feels like a lost town hidden in the mountains. Many of the small buildings built during the village's heyday have been abandoned. The deserted village boasts the best water quality on both islands. In summer, every building is entangled in vines and creepers, and with the mountains covered in verdant trees and shrubs, Houtouwan now resembles something straight out of the fairytale "The Wizard of Oz." Concerned about my parents' physical condition, we didn't venture further into the deserted village. Furthermore, the vegetation hadn't yet flourished, and the creepers and plants had withered, giving the village a quiet and eerie atmosphere, lacking the romantic charm of the Wizard of Oz. We took some photos midway up the mountain and then departed.

This place is quite unique. I went there because my colleagues highly recommended it. After I went there, a photographer posted a set of photos on Weibo that made it a hotspot. It's quite difficult to find. When I went there, it was foggy and looked like a typhoon was approaching, which was a bit scary. Two of us were driving, and we both wanted to give up because we couldn't find it. We finally found it by asking along the way. It's quite remote. As you can see from the photos, it's also foggy, which makes it even more mysterious. If you walk to the end, you can see the ocean. I didn't because I was already exhausted from looking for it. Most importantly, my teammate had a cold, so I didn't insist on walking to the end. It's best to be prepared, like wearing insect repellent, good walking shoes, and asking around.

The deserted village, known as the "no-man's village" by the locals, faces the sea and once had more than 3,000 households. It was a very wealthy village more than 20 years ago. People here made a living by eating and drinking, and were hardworking and simple. However, due to various reasons such as the children's education in the mountains, the villagers moved away one after another. Now there is only one family still living there. There is no water or electricity, and they grow some vegetables there to sell. Over the years, the vegetation here has covered the entire hillside, and every household has been "swallowed" by the green vegetation, turning it into a paradise. There is only one beautiful landscape in China. Since last year, tourists from all directions have come in an endless stream.

The highlight of the Shengshan wolfberry tour. A sea of greenery, so refreshing. A taxi from Shengshan Street costs 30 yuan, but it's actually quite close on foot, though the climb is a bit tiring. Taxis don't go directly to the scenic spot; it takes about five minutes to reach. There are many graves along the way, so consider this carefully if you're traveling with children. Be prepared for a hard time visiting the deserted village. Not only is the walk from the parking lot to the village, but even the climb up is exhausting. I nearly got heatstroke, so bring plenty of water. There's a small temple on the way to the village, and the staff there are very welcoming. It's also a great place to take panoramic photos of the village. There aren't many shops in the village, just a small store in the center, so bring some snacks. And most importantly, be sure to contact the taxi driver as you ascend from the village! Otherwise, be prepared to get sunburned. My group contacted the driver right after leaving the village, but still waited for over an hour. Just thinking about the scorching sun at the beach and my youthful self, oh my god!

It's a very unique place and it's already very famous, but be careful of mosquitoes in the summer.

By Tyrant Bear |

The deserted village is relatively close to the East Asian Cliff, and can be reached in 40 minutes on foot. The buildings are full of mosses, and it is a bit eerie when you go there on a cloudy day.

It's a very unique place, where horror movies are shot. You can rent a car to go there or walk up the mountain. It's not far

By MarIboro |

The deserted village is actually Houtouwan Village. I asked the only elderly couple left in the village, but they refused to explain why everyone in the village had moved out. It was also a bit strange to walk around the village during the day.

By scared and dizzy |

As the name suggests! The Wizard of Oz! Ah! It’s so scary walking inside!

By Laughing Baby |

An uninhabited village. I didn't understand it at first. Arriving was terrifying. A sea of graves. Then, over the hill and down the hill, there were empty houses left behind by the villagers who had moved away. I finally understood what a deserted village meant. There was absolutely no scenery, and I even encountered a film crew shooting a horror movie! If you have children, absolutely avoid this place. It's exhausting and will leave a lasting impression on your children.

By A-I really can't think of a name. |

It's quite a distance inside and quite difficult to find. As you walk, you'll come across a small temple where people can rest. From there, there's a long flight of stairs. As you descend, you'll constantly see people coming up, breathless. At this point, you need to be even more determined to keep going! Don't be afraid of the many stairs you'll have to climb! This uninhabited village is hidden in the valley, with strong sunshine and strong winds. A must-see for photography enthusiasts!

By Kai Xiaoxi |

As the name suggests, it is an uninhabited village. Due to the inconvenience of transportation, the residents abandoned their original houses and moved to the town, forming a deserted village. The houses that look like small villas by the sea are now empty, and the walls and the ground are covered with various vines, making it a green scene. It is beautiful, but there is always a sense of desolation.

Looking at these dilapidated houses, I thought about how happy the villagers who once lived here must have been. Every day, they could open their doors to the sea, living in nature, isolated from the world, and free from conflict. Houses were close together, and the neighborhoods were bustling. We walked for a long time, but we still hadn't reached the end of the village. Thinking back to when the residents hadn't moved away, this must have been a very prosperous village.
