The Yunling New Fourth Army Historical Materials Exhibition Hall, located northwest of Jingxian County in southern Anhui Province, is a picturesque spot surrounded by mountains on three sides and a river on one side. It is also the site of the Southern Anhui Incident. From the spring of 1938 to the spring of 1941 , the New Fourth Army grew from 20,000 troops here to over 90,000, earning Yunling the nickname "the cradle of the New Fourth Army."
In January 1941 , the New Fourth Army, ordered to march north to fight the Japanese, was ambushed by the Kuomintang here, suffering heavy losses. This was the " Southern Anhui Incident ," which shocked China and the world . Zhou Enlai, heartbroken, penned the lines , " A great injustice through the ages, a single leaf in the south of the Yangtze River ; fighting within the same family, why so eager to harm each other !"
The Historical Materials Exhibition Hall displays more than a thousand pictures and charts, more than 800 precious cultural relics and works of art, and more than 10 groups of landscapes and multimedia. The exhibition hall restores historical events through multimedia scenes, allowing people to intuitively feel the hardships when the New Fourth Army was founded, the severe blow suffered in the Southern Anhui Incident, and the rapid development after the reconstruction of the military headquarters.
