Sanping Scenic Area is located in Wenfeng Town, Pinghe County, Zhangzhou City, 47 kilometers from Zhangzhou City and 100 kilometers from Xiamen. The planned scenic area covers 20 square kilometers. The central scenic area, 12 square kilometers in size, is centered around Sanping Temple. Over a thousand years of evolution, the area has preserved numerous cultural landmarks, known as the Eight Scenic Spots of Ancient Times and the Twenty-Four Scenic Spots of Modern Times. Its "three and a half halls" structure is a nationally rare sight. In 2004, Sanping Scenic Area was designated as one of the sixth provincial-level scenic spots, and in 2005, it was designated a national 4A-level tourist area.
Sanping Temple, located within the scenic area, has endured wars, fires, and natural disasters throughout the Tang, Song, Yuan, Ming, Qing, and Republic of China dynasties, undergoing repairs, renovations, and reconstructions over 100 times. The existing Sanping Temple has undergone continuous maintenance since 1979, with its overall layout and architectural style largely preserved in accordance with ancient texts.
The subtropical monsoon humid climate has formed a scenic area with Sanping Canyon as the main body and the snake-tongue-shaped valley surrounded by two streams as the central scenic area. It is characterized by "mountains, springs, forests and caves", which is suitable for travel in all seasons.
Sanping Temple is a renowned Zen Buddhist temple in China and a provincial-level cultural relic protection unit. The three characters "Sanping Temple" (Sanping Temple) on the main entrance of the main hall were personally inscribed by Zhao Puchu. Nestled at the foot of Sheshan Mountain, with the Chenhu Forest behind it, the temple faces south and covers an area of over 30,000 square meters, with a total floor area of 3,300 square meters. Construction began in 866 AD by the Tang Dynasty monk Yang Yizhong, a prominent monk. Following successive dynasties, the temple was repeatedly destroyed and rebuilt, with the final restoration in 1783 (the 49th year of the Qianlong Emperor's reign in the Qing Dynasty) and the pagoda and hall rebuilt in 1817 (the 23rd year of the Jiaqing Emperor's reign).

Sanping Scenic Area is located in Zhangzhou, Fujian province. You can reach the area by taxi or bus from Zhangzhou city center. If you're coming from Xiamen, there are direct buses to Zhangzhou, followed by a local taxi to the park. Walking from the city center is also possible, but it may take around 45 minutes to an hour.
Sanping Scenic Area is open from 8:00 AM to 6:00 PM daily. The best times to visit are during spring and autumn when the weather is mild and the park’s flowers are in bloom. Weekdays are less crowded, offering a more peaceful experience.
The entrance fee to Sanping Scenic Area is around 30-50 RMB. Tickets can be purchased directly at the entrance, and it’s also possible to buy tickets online through local travel platforms, especially during peak seasons.
Booking tickets in advance is recommended during peak travel seasons or holidays, but it's not strictly necessary during off-peak times. Booking a few days in advance will help ensure availability during busy periods.
You will need around 2-3 hours to fully explore Sanping Scenic Area, including the trails, temples, and lakes. If you plan to hike or take a boat ride, you may want to allocate around half a day for a more relaxed experience.
Guided tours in Mandarin are available. English-language audio guides may not be widely offered, so it's a good idea to check in advance if you're specifically looking for them.
The best viewpoints are located at the top of the park's hiking trails and near the lakes, where you can capture the expansive views of the surrounding mountains, forests, and water. The early morning light or late afternoon provides the best photography opportunities.
Start your visit with a walk around the lakes, followed by a hike to the higher points for panoramic views. Afterward, explore the historical temples and relax in the scenic spots before heading to the main exit.
Night visits are generally not available at Sanping Scenic Area. However, the area offers a calm, serene atmosphere, particularly in the early morning or late afternoon. There are no light shows, but the natural beauty at sunset is a great time to explore.
Sanping Scenic Area can get crowded during weekends and public holidays. To avoid the crowds, it’s best to visit on weekdays, especially early in the morning or during the off-peak months (autumn or winter).

There are small souvenir shops at the park selling local handicrafts, tea sets, and Fujian-style snacks. You can also find traditional items like calligraphy, paintings, and locally made pottery.
Taxi services are available for onward travel. Alternatively, public buses and high-speed trains are convenient options for continuing your journey to other cities like Xiamen or Fuzhou.
