Putuo Temple, located in Fengshan, Anxi County, Fujian Province, was founded in 961 AD, the second year of the Jianlong reign of the Song Dynasty. Originally named "Long'an" and later renamed "Shanhui," it boasts a history spanning over a thousand years. The temple's name was personally inscribed by Master Jieren, the abbot of Putuo Mountain in Nanhai. The "Guanyin of the South China Sea" statue was brought from Putuo Mountain in Zhejiang Province for permanent enshrinement. Numerous elders and sages have diligently worshipped the Buddha, meditated, promoted Buddhism, and sought salvation for all.
The architecture is styled after the Tang Dynasty. Within the completed Yuantong Hall, a bronze statue of the Thousand-Armed and Thousand-Eyed Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva stands 8.68 meters tall and weighs 16 tons. The temple also boasts a cliff carving dedicated to agricultural promotion, a protected cultural relic in Anxi County. Inscribed in regular script is the inscription: "I came to the mountain to publish my work. In the autumn, I promoted agricultural duties. At the beginning of the Xinchou year of the Xuanhe reign, Wu Gongquan of Maeda and Huang Zongzhi of Longdang." Promoting agricultural promotion was a unique practice during the Tang and Song dynasties. The inscription discusses the relationship between mountain monks and agricultural promotion, and records the visits of Song Dynasty officials to the temple to promote agricultural promotion. The inscription dates back to the Xinchou year of the Xuanhe reign (1121 AD).
