Introducing Xiangxuehai

Xiangxuehai is located in Guangfu District, Suzhou. In 1696, in the 35th year of the reign of Emperor Kangxi, the provincial governor Song Lu, inspired by his artistic pursuits, inscribed the three characters "Xiangxuehai" on the cliffs. Since then, Xiangxuehai has become famous throughout China. Both Emperor Kangxi and Emperor Qianlong visited Xiangxuehai many times, and Qianlong's imperial stele, "Re-writing the Old Rhymes of Dengyu's Xiangxuehai Song," still remains.

The history of plum blossom cultivation in Guangfu can be traced back to the end of the Qin Dynasty and the beginning of the Han Dynasty. For more than two thousand years, it has not only been enduring, but has also expanded to surrounding areas. The plum blossoms in Xiangxuehai are known as one of the four major plum blossom viewing spots in the country, along with Chaoshan in Hangzhou, Meihuashan in Nanjing, and Meiyuan in Wuxi.

The annual plum blossom season in Dengwei draws countless visitors, and over time, "viewing the plum blossoms in Dengwei" has become a seasonal custom. Every time the flowers bloom, visitors flock to Dengwei in search of spring. Emperor Kangxi of the Qing Dynasty, Xuanye, visited Dengwei three times to view the plum blossoms, and Emperor Qianlong, Hongli, made six visits. The two emperors wrote a total of 19 poems while in Guangfu, 13 of which are about plum blossoms. These poems have now been engraved on stele and are displayed in Xiangxue Garden for visitors to admire.
