Introducing Zhang Ting

Zhangting, one of the few Ming Dynasty buildings remaining in Zhouzhuang Ancient Town, was originally named Yishun Hall and later renamed Yuyan Hall, commonly known as Zhangting. It was an official residence with its own garden, and its striking layout, characterized by sedan chairs passing through the gate and boats passing by the house, is quite remarkable.

The first entrance to Zhang Hall is the entrance hall; the second is the sedan chair hall, also known as the tea room, where the host receives sedan chair bearers, boatmen, and other common guests. A natural marble screen wall features patterns resembling a landscape painting. The third entrance is the main hall, Yuyan Hall, used for weddings, funerals, and VIP receptions. Furnished with Ming-style furniture, the hall features two prominent oval carved panels at each corner of the main beam, resembling the wings of an ancient official's hat. This reflects the characteristics of an official residence, leading to its nickname, Gauze Hat Hall.

The fourth-floor hall served as the living quarters for the women. The nanmu drum-shaped pillars beneath the columns are noteworthy, having survived over 500 years and are truly precious. A couplet in the center of the hall's wall reads, "The sedan chair enters through the door, the boat passes by the house."

The fifth hall is the chess and music room, the sixth is the study, and then there's the back garden. The back garden is truly remarkable. The small river, Zhujing, connects to the lake outside, and a pond serves as a dock for boats. This is, in fact, the Zhang family's private wharf, meaning "boats pass through their own home," a testament to the family's wealth. A Taihu stone Jade Swallow Peak in the back garden is also quite eye-catching.
