Shanghu Scenic Area is located west of Changshu City, south of Yushan Mountain. It derives its name from the legend that Jiang Taigong, a recluse who fished here during the late Shang Dynasty, was built in early 1986. Nestled between the mountains and the lake, it seamlessly integrates with the ancient city, embracing the beauty of mountains and rivers, and bridging the gap between urban and rural areas. A long causeway traverses the lake, while seven islands—Hexiang Island, Diaoyu Island, Mingqin Island, and Taohua Island—create a unique landscape of islands within a lake and lake within islands. The successful introduction of Yangtze River water into the lake, coupled with regular water changes, has ensured that the lake's water quality consistently meets the National Class II standard, making it the best among Suzhou's lakes. The ecological balance is also improving, with an increasing number of birds returning to Shanghu each year. There are now 65 species of flying, wading, and waterfowl, including the Scaly merganser, white stork, swan, and mandarin duck, all of which are under Class I and Class II national protection. In the past two years, over 10,000 wild ducks have wintered here during the autumn and winter seasons.
