Introducing Fengmen

Located east of Suzhou City in Jiangsu Province, south of Xiangmen Gate, it was originally named Fengmen, after Fengyu Mountain. Because of the presence of porpoises (fish) in the nearby river, it was also known as Yuxian Gate and Yufu Gate. The name was changed to Fengmen Gate because of the abundance of water chestnuts (茭白) in the surrounding ponds. The gate was rebuilt several times throughout the ages. In the early Qing Dynasty, the gatehouse was rebuilt with the inscription "Qingling Reflections of the Stream" and a water gate was added. The gatehouse was demolished in the 25th year of the Republic of China. The city gate was demolished in the 1950s.
