Bao'en Temple is located in the south of Ningde City, Fujian Province. It was first built by Zen Master Yuanzhuang in the ninth year of Tang Xiantong (868 AD), and rebuilt by Master Yinliang during the Qianlong period of Qing Dynasty. The last renovation was between 1981 and 1998.
In addition to the old main hall, built during the first year of Emperor Qianlong's reign in the Qing Dynasty, new buildings have been added, including the Main Hall, Yuantong Hall, guest hall, and monks' quarters. Important cultural relics include the Tang Dynasty stone pagoda and the Venus Well, both of which are protected by the municipal government. The pagoda complex houses two pagodas, the Tang Yuanzhuang Zen Master Pagoda being the most famous and containing a Tang Dynasty ship-coffin-style urn.
The current abbot, Venerable Dingri, is over sixty years old and a native of Ningde City, Fujian Province. He became a monk in 1960 and studied under Venerable Jieliang. He also serves as the vice president of the Buddhist Association of Ningde City, Fujian Province.
