Jiangsu University is located in the scenic city of Zhenjiang, Jiangsu Province. Approved by the Ministry of Education in August 2001, it was established through the merger of the former Jiangsu University of Science and Technology and Zhenjiang Medical College. It is a comprehensive university specializing in engineering and research.

The school shares the same origin with Nanjing University, Southeast University and other schools, and its history can be traced back to the Sanjiang Normal School founded in Nanjing in 1902.

In 1978, it was designated as one of the 88 key universities in the country by the State Council. In 1981, it became one of the first universities in the country with the authority to confer doctoral and master's degrees and has a graduate school. It is one of the 74 universities in the country with "characteristic key projects" and one of the first 61 universities in the country with "Excellent Engineer Education and Training Program".

As of April 2016, the university had an enrollment of over 33,000 students, including over 22,000 full-time undergraduates, over 10,000 graduate students, and over 1,000 international students. Nearly 10,000 full-time students are enrolled at Jiangsu University Jingjiang College. The campus covers an area of ​​2,822 mu (approximately 1.28 million square meters) and boasts a total building area of ​​over 1.28 million square meters. Teaching and research equipment is valued at 760 million yuan. The library, covering 51,000 square meters, houses over 3.05 million books and 1.73 million e-books. It also houses a Ministry of Education Science and Technology Novelty Retrieval Station.
