Mengxi Garden was where Shen Kuo, a renowned scientist of the Northern Song Dynasty, lived in his later years. It was here that he wrote his magnum opus, "Mengxi Bitan." Dr. Joseph Needham, a British scientist who studies the history of Chinese science and technology, praised "Mengxi Bitan" as a scientific landmark of the 11th century.

The garden boasts buildings such as Anlao Hall, Xiaoxiao Hall, Kexuan, Shenzhai, Yuanting, and Cangxia Pavilion, with a stream flowing through the garden. In the rear hall, a full-length statue of Shen Kuo is displayed, along with text, images, models, and real objects showcasing his scientific achievements in astronomy, geography, mathematics, chemistry, physics, biology, geology, and medicine.

The couplets on the two pairs of pillars in the room provide a high-level summary and evaluation of Shen Kuo's life: "Shen traveled to the East China Sea, West Sea, South Sichuan and Northern China, and in his dreams, the rivers and mountains were particularly magnificent; Kuo was well-versed in astronomy, geology, humanities and physics, and his pen discussed all aspects." "Several volumes of rare cultural relics were recorded without any care; the first moon sailed south and north for the people."
