Jiangsu Normal University is located in Xuzhou, Jiangsu Province, a famous historical and cultural city. It is a key provincial university developed by Jiangsu Province and Xuzhou City, and a university jointly established by the Ministry of Education and the People's Government of Jiangsu Province.

Jiangsu Normal University originated from the Southern Jiangsu Military Region's Cultural Intensive Training School for Retired Cadres, founded in 1952. The Jiangsu Provincial Secondary School Teacher Training Program was established in 1956. In 1957, Jiangsu Normal College was founded. In 1959, it merged with Xuzhou Normal College to form Xuzhou Normal University, then the only undergraduate institution in northern Jiangsu. In 1981, it became one of the first institutions in China to grant master's degrees. In 1996, the university was renamed Xuzhou Normal University. In 1999, the Xuzhou Industrial School, formerly under the Ministry of Coal Industry, was incorporated. In 2011, the university was renamed Jiangsu Normal University.

As of December 2018, the university has four campuses: Quanshan, Yunlong, Kuiyuan, and Jiawang. The university covers an area of ​​2,457 mu (approximately 1,000 acres), with a campus area of ​​925,000 square meters and a library collection of 2.95 million books. It has 26 colleges, one academy, and the independent College of Science and Culture.
