Introducing Jiguan Cave
Jiguan Cave, located in Luanchuan County, Luoyang City, Henan Province, is a large limestone cave on the slopes of Jiguan Mountain, a branch of the Funiu Mountain range, a remnant of the Qinling Mountains. It is a karst landform. Jiguan Cave is 5,600 meters long, with over 1,800 meters of viewing area available, and a total viewing area of 23,000 square meters. This type of cave is rare in northern China and is known as the "Normal Cave."
Jiguan Cave is a limestone cavern, with stalagmites and stalactites as its main features. Both stalagmites and stalactites are chemically composed of calcium carbonate. Carbonic acid in rainwater and carbon dioxide in the air react with the limestone to form a calcium bicarbonate solution. As the solution flows and drips, hydrogen is released, and the remaining calcium carbonate solidifies and petrifies into a variety of stalagmites and stalactites. Stalagmites and stalactites grow one centimeter every 100 years.
The stone flowers in the cave are calcite crystals, carbonate crystals that adhere to moonstones and spread outward under the influence of gravity-free water, forming flowers over time. Stone shields, curly stones, and cymes record the complex patterns of fluid dynamics. Jiguan Cave is highly ornamental, and its multidisciplinary contributions, encompassing physics, chemistry, geography, meteorology, and natural sciences, make it a precious natural heritage site.
