Introducing Longmen Ten Thousand Buddha Caves
The Longmen Ten Thousand Buddha Caves are named for the 15,000 small Buddha statues neatly arranged on the north and south sides of the cave. The caves exude a solemn atmosphere yet exude a vibrant vitality. Inheriting the traditional iconography of Henan Province and following the established Longmen style, the caves developed a mature style from the Tang Dynasty. The caves feature a front and back chamber structure. The front chamber features two powerful warriors and two lions, while the back chamber features a Buddha, two disciples, two bodhisattvas, and two heavenly kings. This is the most complete assemblage of statues at the Longmen Grottoes. The guardian lions were stolen in the 1930s and are now housed in the Boston Museum.
On the north side of the passageway at the entrance to the cave is an inscription that reads, "Sramana Zhiyun, in obedience to the Empress Dowager, the Crown Prince, and the other kings, respectfully built 15,000 statues and one niche." The entire cave, shrouded in splendor, presents the ideal land of the Western Paradise and creates a warm and joyful atmosphere of universal enlightenment.
