Located at 86 Yuemiao Street in Tangyin County, Henan Province, Yue Fei Temple, also known as Jingzhong Temple, was built (1103-1142) to commemorate Yue Fei, a renowned general who fought against the Jin Dynasty during the Southern Song Dynasty and a renowned Chinese national hero. While the date of its initial construction is unknown, the current site was rebuilt in 1450 during the first year of the Jingtai reign of the Ming Dynasty. Subsequent additions were made throughout the dynasties, gradually forming a complete ancient architectural complex.
The Yue Fei Temple scenic area covers over 6,300 square meters and features over 100 halls and corridors, making it a well-preserved complex of ancient buildings from the Ming and Qing dynasties. The scenic area, with its rectangular shape, boasts a rigorous layout and exquisite architecture, including majestic halls, elegant pavilions, towering cypresses, and numerous steles.
In 2011, a large enameled mural reflecting Yue Fei's spirit of "loyalty and filial piety in both civil and military affairs" was added to the main hall of Yue Fei Temple. The "Yue Fei Historical Relics Exhibition Room" was also redesigned and reorganized, using high-tech means and sound, light and electricity to truly and vividly show Yue Fei's glorious life.
With a temperate monsoon climate, Yue Fei Temple has been renovated and expanded many times throughout the ages. It is rich in content, with majestic halls and numerous steles. It is suitable for travel in all seasons.
The Yue Fei Temple faces south and has a rectangular exterior. The Jingzhong Archway, facing west, is home to an exquisitely crafted wooden archway. Beyond the archway lies the Mountain Gate, the temple's main entrance. This three-bay structure faces south and is located north. Behind the gate is the main hall, the main structure of the temple, built in the first year of the Jingtai reign of the Ming Dynasty. The east and west wings flanking the main hall house the shrines of Yue Fei's generals, as well as the ancestral halls of Zhou Tong, Han Shizhong, Zong Ze, and He Zhu. Behind the main hall are the sleeping halls, the Yue Yun Shrine, the Four Sons Shrine, the Yue Ke Shrine, the Xiao'e Shrine, the Three Generations Shrine, the Virtuous Mother Shrine, and the Shrine of Yue Fei's Mother's Tattoo.
