
The ancient city of Song, located in the southwest corner of present-day Shangqiu, is the site of the capital of Song, where Weizi was granted the title of Duke of Song in the early Zhou Dynasty. Song was a political, economic, and cultural center in Chinese history during the Shang and Zhou dynasties. Song was one of the Five Hegemons of the Spring and Autumn Period and exerted a significant influence on history.
The city site is rectangular in plan, with an east wall of 2,900 meters, a south wall of 3,550 meters, a west wall of 3,010 meters, and a north wall of 3,252 meters, covering a total area of 10.2 square kilometers, which is approximately 10 times the size of the present-day ancient city of Shangqiu .
