Introducing Yanyiwei

Yanyiwei is located at the foot of Liyu Village in the center of Yangcun Town, Longnan County. With its gate facing east, it is a four-story, interconnected square structure of brick and wood. The enclosure stands 14.3 meters high, 1.45 meters thick, 41.5 meters long, and 31.8 meters wide. Its thick, sturdy outer walls stand upright, like a thousand-foot-high cliff. The walls are studded with musket holes, and four artillery towers in the east, south, west, and north coordinate with each other, creating a comprehensive firepower network. Entry into the enclosure requires passing through a single gate, which consists of an outer iron gate, a middle gate, and an inner wooden door. Once the gate is closed, outsiders are forbidden.

Yanyiwei boasts a scientific layout, rigorous structure, and robust defenses. It serves as a bunker in battle and a multifunctional home when the cannon is deployed. It fully embodies the Hakka people's unyielding struggle for survival, embodies their wisdom and strength, and offers a vivid history of Hakka evolution, expressing its rich cultural heritage. Longhuiwei, located in Ganzhou's Wulong Hakka Culture Park, is a 1:1 replica of Yanyiwei.

Hakka walled houses are not only a physical representation of Hakka culture, but also a unique cultural phenomenon within China's traditional architectural culture. Therefore, research on the Yanyi Walled House, a typical representative of Hakka walled houses in southern Jiangxi, not only helps us gain a deeper understanding of this dwelling form and deepen our understanding of Hakka people's ideas, concepts, and cultural values, but also facilitates the absorption and utilization of local architectural culture in modern environmental design.
